Pelargonium graveolens, a member of the Geraniaceae family, is native to southern Africa. Its name, derived from the Greek pelargós, means "stork", in reference to the shape of its fruit. Introduced to Europe in the 16th century, this shrub is famous for its rose-scented flowers. Of the many varieties in existence, only a few are used for essential oil extraction, notably rose geranium.
