What really sets Typology apart

Typology has applied the logic of disruption through transparency to cosmetics: active ingredients identified with their concentrations, minimalist formulas with 80-99 % of natural ingredients, eco-designed packaging, accessible prices. Three real market differentiators:

→ Displayed concentrations : Like The Ordinary, Typology names its products by asset and concentration. This is not yet universal in the industry - it's a signal of transparency.

→ Formative minimalism: 5 to 15 ingredients maximum. Fewer ingredients = less risk of reactions. That's real clinical value.

→ Clean + efficient: Documented active ingredients (azelaic acid, PHA, niacinamide, caffeine, retinol) in a natural French philosophy. Unlike some marques clean-only products that sacrifice efficacy.

«Typology has done something clever: inspired by the transparency of The Ordinary, adapted to a natural French positioning. The result is a range I can recommend to patients who want serious active ingredients without complex composition. Minimalism is a real clinical value.»

Verdict Sensitivity (Dr David rule) : ✓ Suitable for sensitive skin  (score : 1.5)

Expert deciphering

Double-molecular-weight AH (high: tensor effect + surface moisturizing film; low: deeper epidermal penetration) + panthenol (vitamin B5) with 2 % (simultaneously humectant + emollient - rare dual action) + 3 humectant sugars (xylose, fructose, glucose). Sensitive skin score: +1.5 - excellent. Universal scores of 84-91/100 for all skin types.

The double-weight AH + panthenol combination is the most complete moisturizing serum on the market at this price. Panthenol plays a rare dual role: humectant and emollient - it attracts water AND limits its evaporation. Redness score: 76.5 - relevant for panthenol's soothing action.

BeautyDecoded score: 4.25/5 out of 2 reviews. Feedback confirms the sensoriality signal linked to HA: application on slightly damp skin recommended (hydrolat, tonic) to avoid the sticky effect on dry skin and linting. Application on dry skin is the recurring problem reported - technical advice to be systematically included.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«AH 3% + B5 2% Serum is Typology's best-formulated moisturizing serum - double weight AH + panthenol + 3 humectant sugars. Sensitive skin score +1.5: no contraindication. Key application technique: apply to slightly damp skin (hydrolat or toner) to avoid stickiness. Apply moisturizing cream immediately afterwards to seal in moisture.»

Verdict: 9/10 ✅ TOP - AH double weight + B5 2% + 3 sugars. Sensitive skin score +1.5. Redness 76.5. Must be applied to damp skin.

BeautyDecoded user reviews (2 reviews in total)

★★★★★  «The best - after a catastrophic AH serum from Aroma-Zone, this one is perfect.»

★★★★☆  «Good AH serum. Like all AH serums, I prefer to apply it on slightly damp skin (hydrolat). On dry skin: sticky effect and fluffing.»

Verdict Sensitivity (Dr David rule) : △ Slight caution recommended  (score: -0.25)

Expert deciphering

Caffeine 5 % (vasoconstrictor, draining - stimulates local microcirculation, reduces puffiness) + niacinamide 5 % (melanosome transfer inhibition - reduces dark circles, improves microcirculation). Universal scores 84-91 for all skin types. Sensitive skin score: -0.25 - almost perfect.

Perfect BeautyDecoded rating (5/5 out of 3 reviews) - the best in the Typology catalog for eye contour serums. Feedback confirms a real morning decongestant effect and loyalty (ordered «year-round»). Caffeine is effective on vascular bags - ineffective on anatomical bags (age-related fat hernia). Refrigerated storage recommended - cold thermotherapy amplifies the vasoconstrictive effect.

Anti-aging score: 55.25 and redness score: 42.5 - relevant for a multi-purpose eye care product. At €11.90 / 15 ml, it's one of the best value-for-money products in the BeautyDecoded catalog in this segment.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Caffeine 5% + Niacinamide 5% serum is the Typology eye contour reference - perfect score (5/5), double action puffiness (caffeine) + dark circles (niacinamide). Refrigerated storage for optimal effect. Exceptional value for money. Sensitive skin score -0.25: almost optimal.»

Verdict: 9/10 ✅ TOP - Perfect score 5/5. Double action puffiness + dark circles. ~€11.90: best BeautyDecoded eye contour Q/P ratio. Keep refrigerated.

Niacinamide Unifying Serum 12% - ✅ TOP

Price : ~26 € / 30 ml | Range : Serums

⚠️ This product is not yet in the BeautyDecoded database - analysis based on INCI formulation only.

Expert deciphering

12 % niacinamide in a formula of just 9 ingredients - one of the purest on the market for this active ingredient. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, 87 % of botanical ingredients. The concentration of 12 % is among the highest available over-the-counter.

Documented action at this concentration: sebum regulation, reduction of enlarged pores, spot reduction (melanosome transfer inhibition), anti-inflammatory, barrier reinforcement (stimulation of endogenous ceramides). Not present in the BeautyDecoded database at the time of analysis.

Clinically validated strategic use: use as a support when introducing retinol or vitamin C to improve skin tolerance. Niacinamide is the most universally compatible active ingredient - no known incompatibilities with other cosmetic actives.

📚 Source: Draelos ZD et al. Niacinamide-containing facial moisturizer. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2005.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Niacinamide 12% Serum is Typology's purest niacinamide formula - 9 ingredients, 12%, fragrance-free. The most universally compatible active in the range. Ideal as a support when introducing irritating actives (retinol, vitamin C). More economical alternative to 10% Niacinamide Booster Paula's Choice (52 €/20 ml) on the same concentration.»

Verdict: 8.5/10 ✅ TOP - 9-ingredient formula, niacinamide 12%. Compatible with everything. Ideal retinol/vitamin C support. Not yet in BeautyDecoded base.

Azelaic acid 10% + Bamboo extract - Matifying

Verdict Sensitivity (Dr David rule) : ✓ Suitable for sensitive skin  (score : 0)

Expert deciphering

Azelaic acid 10 % + bamboo extract (sebum-absorbing, immediate mattifying effect) + zinc. Oily skin score: 91 and imperfections: 90.1 - the highest in the Typology catalog for this criterion. Dry skin score: 43.4 - unsuitable. Sensitive skin score: 0 - perfectly suited.

BeautyDecoded score: 3.13/5 out of 4 reviews - the lowest of the products analyzed. Feedback reveals a gap between formulatic promises and expectations: the product effectively matifies (confirmed in 3 reviews) but its anti-blemish action is deemed absent or insufficient. Two recurring problems: pipette failure (reported in 2 reviews) and potentially irritating zinc.

Azelaic acid at 10 % has documented evidence on blackheads, rosacea and spots - but its visible action on acne requires 8-12 weeks. The pipette problem reported in the reviews is a packaging flaw that is not related to the formulation but compromises the user experience.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Azelaic Acid 10% + Bamboo is formally relevant (blemishes 90.1, sensitive skin 0, oily skin 91) but its BeautyDecoded rating (3.13/5) reflects two distinct problems: poorly calibrated expectations on azelaic acid (results in 8-12 weeks, not 1 month) and a real packaging flaw (faulty pipette reported in several reviews).»

Verdict: 6.5/10 ⚠️ - Imperfections score 90.1 (excellent). Low score (3.13/5): pipette faulty + expectations not calibrated (AA = 8-12 wks.). Zinc may irritate certain skin types.

BeautyDecoded user reviews (4 reviews in total)

★★★★☆  «Very good matte finish. But no anti-blemish effect as hoped. Does its mattifying job well.»

★★★☆☆  «Good product but contains too much zinc - if your skin can't stand it, you'll struggle even with oily skin.»

★★★☆☆  «Matifies my skin well. Not active on blemishes. Pipette that doesn't work - white color and not transparent.»

★★☆☆☆  «Supposed to be mattifying but I shone even more afterwards. Pipette quickly stopped working: I had to throw away 80% of the product.»

⚠ Retinol: gradual introduction (1 evening/week × 4 weeks min). SPF 50+ in the morning. Contraindicated during pregnancy/breastfeeding. Do not combine with AHA/BHA on the same evening.

Expert deciphering

Retinol 0.3 % in a castor oil + soybean oil base - ultra-minimalist 5-ingredient formula. Anti-ageing score: 93.5 and spots: 88.4 - among the highest in the Typology catalog. Dry skin score: 89.6 - optimal. Oily skin score: 28 - unsuitable (formula too oily for this profile).

Perfect BeautyDecoded score (5/5 out of 3 reviews) - the best score in the Typology catalog. Feedback indicates superior tolerance to other retinols: non-irritating on normal to dry skin and sensitive skin. Sensorial drawback: oily texture difficult to spread, as noted in one review.

Identified limitation: Typology offers only one concentration of retinol (0.3 %). For profiles that progress, you need to change brands - SVR Ampoule [A] (0.3/0.6/1 %) or Nooance offer this progression. Sensitive skin score: -2.20 - slight caution consistent with retinol at this concentration.

📚 Source: Mukherjee S et al. Retinoids in the treatment of skin aging. Clin Interv Aging. 2006.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Retinol 0.3% is the Typology product with the highest BeautyDecoded score (5/5) - superior tolerance to other retinols according to reviews, clean 5-ingredient formula, anti-aging 93.5. Oily skin score 28: exclude from this profile (oily base). Range limit: a single concentration - no progression possible with Typology.»

Verdict: 8.5/10 ✅ TOP - Rating 5/5. Anti-ageing 93.5, spots 88.4. Tolerance confirmed. Oily skin score 28: contraindicated. No concentration progression in the range.

BeautyDecoded user reviews (3 reviews in total)

★★★★★  «Non-irritating on my normal to dry skin. I don't know if it works on wrinkles as I started before I had any.»

★★★★★  «More beautiful skin, non-irritating unlike other retinols. I even apply it around the eyes.»

★★★★★  «Non-irritating on sensitive skin, but spreads very poorly - not a pleasant texture. I won't buy it again.»

11 % sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) - a stable derivative of vitamin C. SAP is more stable than pure ascorbic acid, but requires enzymatic conversion to become active. Equally effective, less potent than pure AA at the same concentration. Stain score: 76.5 - relevant for anti-pigmentation action. Universal score of 84/100 for all types.

BeautyDecoded score: 4.75/5 out of 2 reviews - very good score. Feedback shows a visible change after 6 months of morning use: improved radiance, tightening effect, smoother skin. The pipette is cited as a strong point (precise dosage). Small size (30 ml) mentioned as a constraint, but useful for storage.

SAP's real advantages: better tolerance on sensitive skin (pH less acidic than pure AA), stability over time. At €12.50, value for money is excellent. Ideal positioning: sensitive skin or beginners wishing to introduce vitamin C without risk of irritation.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Vitamin C Serum 11% (SAP) is good value for money (€12.50) - superior tolerance to pure ascorbic acid, score 76.5, rating 4.75/5. Less effective than pH-calibrated pure AA (C15 Super Booster Paula's Choice, C-Firma Drunk Elephant) but much more affordable. Ideal for starting out with vitamin C on sensitive skin.»

Verdict: 7.5/10 Correct - SAP stable and tolerant. Stains 76.5. €12.50: excellent Q/P ratio. Less effective than pure AA at calibrated pH.

BeautyDecoded user reviews (2 reviews in total)

★★★★★  «Top. Used 6 months: real change. Practical pipette (just the right dose). Small size but preserves quality.»

★★★★★  «1 month every morning: radiant skin, tightening effect, smoothed face. In the evening I need additional hydration.»

Redness score: 93.5 - exceptional, the highest in the Typology catalog. Spots score: 85.0 - relevant. Sensitive skin score: 0 - perfectly suited. This product was not in the original source article and represents the most significant discovery in the Typology catalog via BeautyDecoded.

Oily skin score: 38.5 - unsuitable (formula too rich for oily skin). Dry skin score: 74.9 - usable. BeautyDecoded score: 4/5 out of 2 polarized reviews: effective on texture and mattifying for one profile, no effect on diffuse redness for a more blotchy profile.

The second opinion reports no effect on «pronounced diffuse redness or couperose» - an important clinical distinction: established vascular couperose (visible dilated vessels) is beyond the scope of topical actives. This cream is relevant for mild reactive and inflammatory redness, not for structured vascular rosacea.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«The C40 Anti-Redness Cream is the discovery of the Typology catalog via BeautyDecoded - redness score 93.5 (the best in the range). For mild reactive redness: relevant option (sensitive skin 0). For established vascular rosacea: insufficient - topical active ingredients cannot correct structured dilated vessels. Oily skin score 38.5: not suitable for this profile».»

Verdict: 8/10 - Redness score 93.5 (best in catalog). Sensitive skin score 0. Absent source article: BeautyDecoded discovery. Limited on established vascular rosacea.

3 % polyglutamic acid (PGA) - a new-generation humectant with greater water retention capacity than hyaluronic acid of the same molecular weight. PGA forms a thicker film on the skin surface, further limiting insensible water loss. Oily skin score: 91 - optimal. Dry skin score: 42 - unsuitable (formula too light for very dry skin).

Perfect BeautyDecoded rating (5/5 out of 2 reviews). Feedback confirms a plumping effect perceived after a few weeks - skin more hydrated, suppler, plumper. Feeling of thickness upon application reported. Sensitive skin score: -1.5 - slight caution.

This product was not in the original source article - discovered via CSV BeautyDecoded. Its optimal profile for oily skin (91) and new-generation humectant make it an interesting addition to dehydrated oily skin routines looking for light, lipid-free hydration.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«Polyglutamic Acid Serum 3% is an interesting discovery from the Typology catalog - new-generation humectant (PGA), optimal profile for oily skin (91), score 5/5. Dry skin score 42: insufficient for this profile, which requires more occlusives. Light moisturizing option for dehydrated oily skin».»

Verdict: 8/10 - PGA (humectant superior to HA). Oily skin score 91. Score 5/5 on 2 reviews. Insufficient for dry skin (score 42). BeautyDecoded discovery.

Tranexamic acid 5 % + tetrapeptide. Redness score: 91.8 - exceptional, among the highest in the BeautyDecoded catalog. Spots score: 79.9 - relevant. Tranexamic acid is clinically documented on melasma (inhibition of keratinocyte-melanocyte interaction). Sensitive skin score: 0 - perfectly suitable.

This product was not in the original source article - discovered via CSV BeautyDecoded. Tranexamic acid is the same active ingredient as in Mela B3 Serum La Roche-Posay (anti-spot reference, spot score 90.1) and Liftactiv B3 Vichy (spot score 95.2). At €32 vs. €32-35 for LRP and Vichy equivalents, the quality/price ratio is comparable.

Rating 5/5 on 2 reviews - insufficient but consistent with AT's documented properties. One review noted difficulty in penetration - consistent with serums with dense aqueous active ingredients requiring gradual application.

Minimalist formula: glycerine + pentylene glycol (humectants) + AH + coconut oil. Normal to dry skin score: 91 - optimal. Sensitive skin score: 0 - perfectly suitable. Oily skin score: 63 - usable, but slightly too rich in lipids (coconut oil) for very seborrheic skin.

Coconut oil is in a notable position in the INCI - nourishing but containing lauric acid (potentially comedogenic on acne-prone skin). On normal to dry skin: neutral or positive. On oily skin with imperfections: watch out.

The only BeautyDecoded review confirms its quality as a light moisturizing cream for sensitive skin. Validated formula tip: combine with a serum beforehand for a more targeted effect.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David

«9-Ingredient Moisturizing Cream is Typology's basic cream - clean, minimalist formula, sensitive skin score 0. Optimal profile for normal to dry skin (91). Coconut oil to watch out for on acne-prone skin. Too light for very dry skin - prefer a richer cream or layer with an occlusive serum.»

Verdict: 8/10 - Minimalist cream with 9 ingredients. Sensitive skin 0. Normal to dry skin: optimal profile. Coconut oil: watch out for acne-prone skin.

BeautyDecoded user reviews (1 review in total)

★★★★☆  «Very gentle, simple ingredients, top for sensitive skin. For a more targeted effect, add a serum first.»

The limits of the Typology minimalist approach

Two formulating limits to be aware of:

1. Minimalism has a counterpart: each product does very little. To cover all anti-aging needs, 4 to 6 products are needed. To simplify to 2-3 products: the more complete formulas from Paula's Choice or Nooance are more suitable.

2. The pH is not systematically calibrated: PHA cleansing gel at neutral pH is less effective than PHA formulated at pH 3.5. Paula's Choice remains the benchmark on this point - not resolved by Typology.

Routines Typology by profile

Evening: Serum Polyglutamic acid 3% → Niacinamide 12%

Anti-dark spot + redness

Morning: Tranexamic acid 5% + Tetrapeptide → SPF 50+ (essential)

Evening: Serum AH 3% + B5 → Tranexamic acid 5%

Sensitive skin

Morning: Serum AH 3% + B5 → Moisturizing Cream 9 ingr. → SPF 50+

Evening: Serum AH 3% + B5 → Niacinamide 12% (barrier support)

Frequently asked questions about Typology

How clean is Typology?

Yes, in the sense that it excludes controversial ingredients (parabens, EDTA, nanoparticles). Note: some products contain essential oils (PHA cleansing gel, zinc cream) - potential allergens for highly reactive skin. Active serums are generally HE-free. Check the INCI for each product according to your sensitivity.

Can I use several Typology serums together?

Yes - this is the brand model. Recommended order: wateriest to thickest. Morning example: Serum AH → Niacinamide 12% → Vitamin C → Cream → SPF. Evening: Serum AH → Retinol → Cream. Compatibility: niacinamide + tranexamic acid compatible with everything. Retinol alone in the evening, never with AHA/BHA on the same evening.

Typology vs The Ordinary: which to choose?

For the tight budget: The Ordinary is less expensive on identical assets. For a natural/clean positioning: Typology is more consistent. For calibrated pH: none of the two offers this systematically - Paula's Choice remains the benchmark on this point. For serious ingredients accessible in French, with customer service and diagnostics: Typology.

What is the BeautyDecoded application?

BeautyDecoded is an algorithmic cosmetic analysis device. The application analyzes INCI formulations and generates compatibility scores for 80 skin types. It does not constitute a medical consultation, but helps to objectify product selection according to a precise skin profile.

BeautyDecoded - Independent medical information.

The brand Typology does not offer promo codes

Even if they were inspired by the Ordinary by naming some of their products with the active ingredient(s) and their concentration, they have adopted an even more minimalist formulation. Minimalism is a good thing, but sometimes I prefer more complete and complex formulations so I don't need to multiply the steps in a skincare routine.

All cosmetic products on beautydecoded.com have been personally tested and evaluated by a medical doctor who is also an aesthetic surgeon. Product reviews are based on my own experience: for example, cleansers, serums and creams are tested for several weeks, and a complete analysis of their formulations is carried out before I write a review.
