What is "BAKUCHIOL" and what does it do?
Role: ASSETS
Family: Active Psoralea corylifolia
Comedogenic index: 0
Bakuchiol is an active ingredient derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, which is known for fighting the signs of ageing and skin imperfections.
Comparison with Retinol
Often presented as a natural alternative to retinol, bakuchiol shares many visible benefits with the latter, although the two are not identical. Science has shown that bakuchiol interacts with many of the same areas of the skin as retinol, sometimes via the same pathway, other times via different routes, but leading to similar results such as reduced wrinkles, improved elasticity and smoother skin. Moreover, bakuchiol has a natural stabilizing effect on vitamin A (retinol).
With regard to its anti-acne effect, studies have shown the efficacy of a cosmetic formulation containing bakuchiol, Ginkgo biloba extract and mannitol in controlling seborrhea and treating inflammatory lesions in acne-prone individuals.
Further studies have also shown that bakuchiol can reduce the number of inflammatory lesions and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation phenomena in patients with moderate-to-moderate acne.
In terms of its anti-aging effect, bakuchiol is considered an analog of vitamin A, although it does not have a structure similar to retinoids. Studies have shown that bakuchiol can reduce wrinkle depth and skin pigmentation levels, with better tolerability than retinol. It also promotes collagen synthesis and inhibits the synthesis of metalloproteinases.
The estrogenic activity of bakuchiol has been demonstrated in vitro, although its effect is around 100 times less potent than that of the estrogenic hormone estradiol.
