What is BENZOIC ACID and what does it do?
Role: CONSERVATIVE
Family:
Comedogenic index: 0
Benzoic acid is an ingredient frequently used in cosmetics as a preservative and pH regulator.
This component is recognized as a safe and well-tolerated preservative. It also adjusts the pH of skin care formulations, contributing to their stability and efficacy.
Concentration and safety in use
According to the 2017 recommendations of the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, benzoic acid is safe in cosmetic use up to a concentration of 5%. However, in skin care products, it is generally used in much lower concentrations, typically between 0.2 and 0.5%.
Use in combination with other preservatives
For optimum protection, benzoic acid should be used in combination with other preservatives, especially in water-based formulas. It is particularly effective against fungal growth, but less active against bacteria.
Aromatic Properties and Natural Origins
Although aromatic by nature, benzoic acid is not generally used in sufficient concentration to impregnate skin care products with a detectable fragrance. It is naturally present in many fruits (such as berries), nuts, spices and vegetables, including strawberries, cayenne pepper, mustard, prunes, cinnamon and cloves.
