What is the "COCONUT ALKANES" and what does it do?
Role: LIGHT EMOLLIENT
Family: COCO OIL Derivative,Esterified oil (Esterified emollient) Coco
Comedogenic index: 1
Coconut Alkanes are alkanes of plant origin, volatile (i.e. they are not absorbed by the skin but evaporate from it), derived naturally from renewable sources. It's a light, oily liquid that works like an emollient, leaving the skin feeling soft.
They are often combined with another emollient called Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, and together they can serve as an effective substitute for certain volatile silicones, such as Cyclopentasiloxane. Coconut Alkanes are created from the fatty acids in coconut oil. They are volatile, which means they evaporate from the skin.
Coconut Alkanes are an emollient and a solvent. As an emollient, they help keep skin soft and moisturized. Solvents help distribute and blend other ingredients, ensuring a more uniform consistency.
Some people refer to the comedogenic potential of Coconut Alkanes and advise avoiding them if you have acne-prone skin. The impact on your skin depends on the overall formulation of the product and its interaction with your skin. If the overall formula feels heavy, occlusive or greasy on the skin, there is indeed a potential for clogged pores and the triggering of pimples, but this would depend on the emollient and oil-based ingredients as a whole, not just the coconut alkanes.
