What is "HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA WATER" and what does it do?

Role: PLANT EXTRACTS

Family: PLANT EXTRACTS Hamamelis

Comedogenic index: 0

Witch hazel, a frequently used plant extract, has antioxidant and soothing properties. Nevertheless, its high tannin content (a powerful antioxidant) can cause sensitization on repeated application, by altering proteins essential to skin health.

There is a distinction between "Eau d'Hamamelis Virginiana", obtained by distillation, and "Hamamelis" as an active ingredient. Many witch hazel products contain denatured alcohol, unless otherwise indicated.

As an ingredient, witch hazel water has astringent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The tannins, which can dry out the skin and reduce the appearance of pores, as well as the fragrance, can be sensitizing. Witch hazel also contains catechins with anti-inflammatory properties and antibacterial gallic acid.

Witch hazel bark has a higher tannin content than the leaves, which contain other antioxidant compounds. Steam distillation of witch hazel water removes the tannins and may reduce the need for alcohol, which is potentially irritating to the skin. However, it is the astringent effects of the plant that are often sought.

In short, depending on its form, witch hazel can expose the skin to sensitizing alcohol, tannins, or both. In addition, it contains eugenol, an aromatic compound that can also cause sensitivity.
