Description of hydroxypinacolone retinoate :
Hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR) is an ester of retinoic acid and a relatively recent and more stable member of the retinoid family, a group of potent vitamin A derivatives that offer significant benefits to the skin.
Although hydroxypinacolone retinoate may seem like a foreign ingredient name, you've probably already come across the trade name for this ingredient, Granactive Retinoide. This type combines 10 % of HPR with 90 % of dimethylisosorbide, a solvent.
HPR is a versatile ingredient that interacts with the skin by binding to its retinoic acid receptors within the superficial layers of the skin. Although it binds directly to these receptors, it has been shown to be milder than retinoic acid (tretinoin) when applied topically, meaning that more reactive and sensitive skin types could consider HPR as an alternative to pure retinol.
In addition to its comparatively gentle nature, research has proven that this retinoic acid ester offers both anti-aging and blemish-reducing benefits to the skin. Studies show that HPR helps reduce the appearance of mild rashes and the redness associated with them, with little disruption of the skin barrier when combined with retinol and papain glycospheres.
Those looking to treat fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone can also turn to HPR, as research has also proven that this multi-tasking ingredient reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and improves uneven skin tone.
HPR can have a positive impact on the skin even at percentages as low as 0.02 %. However, its effectiveness diminishes considerably when poorly packaged, for example when stored in jars exposed to light and air. Like all other vitamin A derivatives and antioxidants, HPR must be stored in airtight, opaque packaging to remain effective.
