Pycnogenol is the trade name for bark extract from the French maritime pine, also known as Pinus pinaster, a conifer native to the Mediterranean basin. It is found in Portugal, northern Spain, France and Italy.

Pycnogenol acts primarily as an antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-aging agent in cosmetic products.
Antioxidants aim to neutralize the harmful effects of oxygen or free radicals produced in our bodies. These free radicals can degrade collagen and elastin, compromising the skin's repair process.

They can also cause inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Antioxidants eliminate these harmful oxygen/free radicals, reverse damage to skin proteins and reduce the visible signs of aging. They brighten the skin and give it an even complexion. Products containing natural extracts can be sensitive to various types of degradation.

Antimicrobials therefore protect the skin and the product against infection. It also reduces dandruff and prevents hair loss. It promotes healthy hair growth with improved texture. It is used in formulations of facial cleansers, facial care products, shampoos and other skin and hair care products.

This medium-sized tree, known for its cones, is widely used for its wood, resin, bark and bud extracts in the treatment of various ailments. Pycnogenol is the extract obtained from the bark of this tree. Numerous research studies have demonstrated its benefits in the treatment of a variety of illnesses. The extract is rich in compounds such as flavonoids, catechins, phenolic acids and proanthocyanidins.
