La Roche-Posay: full review (tops and flops)

Article written by Dr Sylvain David - Specialist in aesthetic medicine - Updated: March 2026

ℹ️ The most suitable products depend above all on your skin type. A personalized approach using analysis tools (such as the BeautyDecoded application) can help optimize results.

La Roche-Posay is the dermatological brand I quote most often for sun protection - and deservedly so, for a precise biological reason. But so is Avène, they are capable of the worst as well as the best. Some products have truly solid formulations and published clinical studies. Others contain ingredients that contradict their main promise. This article sorts them out.

What really sets La Roche-Posay apart: the Mexoryl 400 revolution

The reason why La Roche-Posay occupies a special place in my practice is due to a UV filter: the Mexoryl 400. It's the only consumer filter available in France that covers Long UVA (380-400 nm) - the most penetrating UV rays, those that reach deep into the dermis and break down collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

The majority of SPFs on the market - including well-known references such as SVR Sun Secure SPF50+ and Relief Sun Beauty of Joseon - provide good coverage of short-wave UVA and UVB rays, but they can also be used to protect against UVB rays. do not filter long UVA. This is a real gap in terms of deep anti-photo-aging protection.

Science: Long UVA (380-400 nm) accounts for around 20 % of the total UV energy received by the skin. They penetrate to the reticular dermis and are involved in the degradation of elastic fibers, the production of MMPs (collagen-degrading enzymes) and the induction of local immunosuppression. Mexoryl 400 is the only consumer filter that specifically blocks them.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David: Mexoryl 400 makes a real difference to an SPF's level of anti-ageing protection. For my patients with a serious anti-aging objective, Anthelios UVMune 400 is not optional - it's the foundation. All the other SPFs on the market have a real gap when it comes to long UVA rays.

✅ TOP - Anthelios UVMune 400 SPF50+ Cream Gel

Yuka: 100/100  | Rating: 9.5/10 ✅ TOP

Que Choisir : A  | Price : ~20 € / 50 ml | Mexoryl 400 | Reactive skin tested

Gel Crème is the version of UVMune 400 that I recommend specifically for oily, combination and resistant skin. Where the classic fluid version is suitable for all skin types, Gel Crème has a light, matte-effect texture with ultra-fast absorption - with no greasy film or white residue.

It combines the two distinct advantages of the range: the Mexoryl 400 for long UVA coverage, and the maximum skin tolerance tested on atopic and rosacea-prone skin. Fragrance-free. Compatible with make-up immediately after application.

It's SPF that I include as the first line in the anti-aging routines I build. Whatever the rest of the routine - retinol, peptides, vitamin C - SPF is the only active ingredient whose preventive effect is absolutely impossible to circumvent.

«Finally an SPF that doesn't white mask or shine. I've been using it every morning under makeup for 6 months.»

- Nathalie R., 2026 - 5/5 ⭐

«Combination oily skin. It's the first sunscreen I can really stand without feeling like I'm suffocating.»

- Kevin M., 2025 - 5/5 ⭐

Verdict: 9.5/10 ✅ TOP -  The absolute reference for oily skin. Mexoryl 400 = the only complete protection against long UVA rays available to the general public.

✅ TOP - Effaclar Duo+ (anti-imperfections)

Yuka: 100/100  | Rating : 9/10 ✅ TOP

Que Choisir : A  | Note : Price : ~16 € / 40 ml | Published clinical studies

Effaclar Duo+ is one of the few anti-imperfection skincare products that clinical studies are published in peer-reviewed dermatological journals - not just internal brand data. This is a criterion I systematically apply when evaluating a cosmetic product: have the results been submitted to peer review?

Its formula is based on three complementary active ingredients: niacinamide (anti-inflammatory, sebum-reducing, barrier-reinforcing), LHA (lipohydroxamic acid) - a BHA derivative that gently exfoliates sebaceous hair follicles without the irritation of conventional BHA - and piroctone olamine (antimicrobial against C. acnes). The combination acts simultaneously on all three acne mechanisms: inflammation, follicular obstruction and bacterial proliferation.

LHA is an active ingredient little used by other marquess - it's a molecule developed specifically by La Roche-Posay. Its major advantage over conventional BHA: it penetrates the follicle more gradually, The result is effective exfoliation with a much lower risk of irritation. Suitable for sensitive acne-prone skin.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David: Effaclar Duo+ is the blemish-fighting treatment I recommend as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate non-inflammatory acne. The combination of niacinamide + LHA + piroctone olamine covers all three axes of the acne cycle. Published clinical data clearly distinguish it from the majority of anti-acne treatments whose evidence is limited to self-evaluations.

Verdict: 9/10 ✅ TOP -  The best clinically documented anti-blemish treatment on the market. LHA less irritating than conventional BHA.

✅ TOP - Mela B3 Serum (anti-hyperpigmentation)

Yuka: 100/100  | Rating : 9/10 ✅ TOP

Que Choisir : A  | Price : ~32 € / 30 ml | Fragrance-free

Mela B3 Serum is my cosmetic reference for hyperpigmentation. Its formula combines niacinamide 5 %(inhibition of melanosome transfer - the final stage of melanogenesis) + tranexamic acid (inhibition of keratinocyte-melanocyte interaction, reduction in melanin production) + (inhibition of melanin production) HEPES (amino acid with gentle exfoliating action, promotes cell renewal).

Tranexamic acid is an active ingredient I first came across in a medical context (used in surgical haemostasis). Its application in dermatology for hyperpigmentation is well documented, notably for melasma - one of the most stubborn forms of pigmentation spots. Its presence in Mela B3 Serum gives it a credibility few anti-spot serums can match.

The serum's triple action covers three different levels of melanogenesis: production, transfer and elimination by cellular renewal. It's this multi-mechanism approach that makes it more effective than mono-active serums on stubborn spots.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David: For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (after acne, eczema) or mild melasma, Mela B3 Serum is the first cosmetic I try before considering more powerful active ingredients. Tranexamic acid + niacinamide at these concentrations is serious stuff. Results on spots require 8-12 weeks of consistency - but they are measurable.

Verdict: 9/10 ✅ TOP -  Anti-hyperpigmentation reference. Tranexamic acid + niacinamide + HEPES = a serious multi-mechanism approach to stubborn blemishes.

✅ TOP - Tolériane Dermo Cleanser

Yuka: 100/100  | Rating : 9/10 ✅ TOP

Que Choisir : A  | Note : Price : ~10 € / 200 ml | No rinsing possible | Fragrance-free

Toleriane Dermo Cleanser is the cleanser I recommend most often for the most sensitive skin. dry to very dry and sensitive skin. Its surfactant-free formula cleans by adsorption - without foam, without the rough degreasing that alters the hydrolipidic film on skin already depleted in lipids.

The formula contains glycerine and Neurosensine (anti-irritant peptide patented by La Roche-Posay). Fragrance-free, no controversial preservatives. Can be used without rinsing - a practical advantage for post-treatment skin or highly reactive areas where contact with tap water (limescale) aggravates reactivity.

This cleanser is the opposite of Avène's Cleanance Cleansing Gel in my mind: where one is too aggressive with prolonged use, this one is formulated to never compromise the skin barrier, regardless of frequency of use.

Verdict: 9/10 ✅ TOP -  Gentle cleansing reference for dry and sensitive skin. Can be used without rinsing. Does not compromise the skin barrier, even with prolonged daily use.

⚠️ RÉSERVE - Hyalu B5 Serum

Yuka: 93/100  | Rating: 6/10 ⚠️

Que Choisir : A  | Price : ~28 € / 30 ml

Hyalu B5 Serum is sold as a moisturizing serum based on hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 - two active ingredients that are genuinely effective in hydrating and repairing the skin. The problem is in the formula: alcohol (alcohol denat.) is listed in a high position in the INCI., which means that it is present in significant quantities.

Denatured alcohol in cosmetics is a solvent that enhances the penetration of active ingredients and gives an immediate sensation of freshness. But it also has a pro-dehydrating It disrupts the hydrolipidic film and increases insensible water loss. In a serum whose main promise is hydration, this is a formulative contradiction. Hyaluronic acid moisturizes on the one hand; alcohol dehydrates on the other.

For an alcohol-free hyaluronic serum with superior performance: the’SVR B3 ampoule (triple AH + niacinamide 5 %, 12 ingredients, alcohol-free) or Multi-active serum 5 AH Nooance are direct alternatives.

⚠️ Alcohol in a formula is not systematically problematic - it all depends on the concentration and position in the INCI. But in a serum promising intense hydration, its presence in notable quantity is a formulative inconsistency I can't ignore.

Verdict: 6/10 ⚠️ -  Interesting active ingredients (AH + B5) but too much alcohol, which counterbalances the moisturizing effect. Alcohol-free alternatives: SVR Ampoule B3, Nooance Sérum 5 AH.

⚠️ RÉSERVE - Pure Vitamin C Serum

Yuka: 89/100  | Rating: 5/10 ⚠️

Que Choisir : B  | Note : Price : ~32 € / 30 ml

Same problem as Hyalu B5 Serum: presence of alcohol in a vitamin C serum. This is doubly problematic. Firstly, because alcohol dehydrates - the antioxidant effect of vitamin C is partially counterbalanced by the disruption of the hydrolipidic film. Secondly, because vitamin C (pure ascorbic acid) is already unstable and partially irritating on its own - adding alcohol increases the risk of skin irritation, particularly on sensitive skin.

What's more, the Yuka score of 89/100 and the B rating from Que Choisir indicate that the formula contains ingredients of concern - which is unusual for a dermatological brand with this positioning.

For an alcohol-free vitamin C serum with superior performance: the C15 Booster Paula's Choice (15 % ascorbic acid + vitamin E + ferulic acid, alcohol-free) or the Nooance Vitamin C Luminous Serum are direct references.

Verdict: 5/10 ⚠️ -  Alcohol in a vitamin C serum = double problem (dehydration + potential irritation). Superior alcohol-free alternatives available.

Alcohol in La Roche-Posay formulas

The presence of alcohol in several La Roche-Posay products is a real cause for concern. Denatured alcohol is commonly used in cosmetics for several technical reasons: it improves the penetration of active ingredients, confers a light texture and a sensation of freshness, and acts as a preservative. These galenic advantages are real.

The problem arises when alcohol is present in significant quantities in products whose main promise is to moisturize or soothe.. In this case, the dehydrating effect of alcohol is in direct contradiction with the formulative objective. It's not a toxicity - it's an inconsistency.

La Roche-Posay's alcohol-free products (Anthelios UVMune 400, Effaclar Duo+, Sérum Mela B3, Tolériane Dermo Nettoyant) are consistently among the best formulated in their range. It's a selection criterion I apply systematically when I recommend a La Roche-Posay product: check the position of alcohol in the INCI.

Analysis by Dr Sylvain David: La Roche-Posay has the best SPF on the market with Mexoryl 400, and formulas like Effaclar Duo+ or Mela B3 are truly solid. But some flagship products, such as Hyalu B5, disappoint when you read the INCI. My rule: at La Roche-Posay, always check for the presence of alcohol before buying a moisturizing or antioxidant serum.

Avène vs La Roche-Posay: when to choose which one

Choose La Roche-Posay when : you're looking for maximum sun protection (Anthelios UVMune 400 = only consumer filter on long UVA), an anti-blemish treatment with published clinical data (Effaclar Duo+), or a serious anti-dark spot active ingredient (Mela B3).

Choose Avène when : your skin reacts to almost everything, you're in the post-treatment or barrier repair phase, you're looking for the gentlest cleanser possible, or you want a minimalist formula with no risk of reaction.

Use both : it's often the best approach. Tolériane Dermo Nettoyant Avène in the morning → Sérum Mela B3 La Roche-Posay → Anthelios UVMune 400 Gel Crème La Roche-Posay. Or: Spray Avène post-treatment → Effaclar Duo+ La Roche-Posay in the evening.

FAQ

Why is Anthelios UVMune 400 different from other SPF50+ products?

It's the only consumer sunscreen in France to filter out long UVA rays (380-400 nm), thanks to the patented Mexoryl 400 filter. Other SPF50+ sunscreens - even very good ones - are deficient in this wavelength range. Longer UVAs penetrate deeper into the dermis, and are implicated in deep photoaging and dermal collagen degradation.

Is Effaclar Duo+ suitable for hormonal adult acne?

Yes, for mild to moderate forms. Adult acne (often localized on the jawline and chin, linked to hormonal variations) responds well to the niacinamide + LHA combination for daily maintenance. For more severe or resistant forms, a dermatological consultation is necessary - a prescribed treatment (topical retinoid, antibiotic, isotretinoin) will be more effective.

Is Mela B3 Serum effective on melasma?

It is relevant to mild to moderate forms of melasma - its tranexamic acid has clinical data on this indication. Severe melasma remains a complex problem, often requiring a combination of cosmetic care, rigorous sun protection and prescribed dermatological treatment. Without daily SPF50+, no anti-spot active ingredient can be fully effective on melasma.

How can I replace Hyalu B5 Serum with an alcohol-free alternative?

SVR Ampoule B3 (triple AH + niacinamide 5 %, 12 ingredients, alcohol-free, ~€28) is the closest direct alternative. Nooance Multi-active 5 AH Serum (five forms of HA of different molecular weights) is more comprehensive on multi-level hydration. Both are alcohol-free and fragrance-free.

Are La Roche-Posay products compatible with pregnancy?

The majority of La Roche-Posay products recommended in this article (Tolériane Dermo Nettoyant, Anthelios UVMune 400, Sérum Mela B3, Effaclar Duo+) do not contain ingredients formally contraindicated during pregnancy. Redermic R ranges contain retinol - contraindicated. Always check the INCI and consult your doctor or midwife.

La Roche-Posay is owned by L'Oréal - does this affect quality?

Being part of the L'Oréal group since 1989 has not diminished formulations - flagship products maintain their high Yuka and Que Choisir scores and remain dermatological benchmarks. On the contrary, L'Oréal has invested in research into UV filters, leading to the development of Mexoryl 400. A group's origin is no guarantee of its formulative quality.
