The secret of a rare cosmetic treasure: everything you need to know about prickly pear oil

Discover why oil extracted from cactus seeds, extracted by cold pressing, is considered a gem of natural cosmetics. Little known but exceptionally rich, it combines nourishing, antioxidant, and repairing active ingredients. It is suitable for all skin types, including the most sensitive, and can also be used on hair and nails.
Origin and manufacturing process
This oil is extracted from the seeds of the cactus fruit. Prickly pear, commonly known as prickly pear, grown in arid areas such as Morocco, the Mediterranean basin (particularly Sicily), and certain regions of Mexico.
The fruits are harvested by hand to preserve the seeds, then dried before being cold-pressed to ensure the integrity of the active ingredients.
The yield is very low: approximately 3 to 5 liters of oil can be obtained from seeds, which means that nearly a ton of fruit is needed to produce one liter of pure oil.
Biochemical composition
- Essential fatty acids : approximately 60–65% linoleic acid (omega-6), supplemented with oleic acid (omega-9) approximately 13-20 % and a minority of saturated acids such as palmitic and stearic acids.
- Vitamin E : very high, around 900–1000 mg/kg of tocopherols, which provides a significant antioxidant effect.
- Phytosterols : in particular the β-sitosterol (~72TP4T), known for its anti-inflammatory properties, campesterol and the stigmasterol, with a total content of approximately 10 g/kg.
Proven skin benefits
Hydration and strengthening of the skin barrier
Linoleic acid strengthens the cohesion between cells in the stratum corneum and limits insensible water loss. Oleic acid forms a protective film to preserve the epidermis.
Antioxidant action and anti-aging effect
Vitamin E and sterols neutralize free radicals caused by UV rays, pollution, or oxidative stress. They help preserve collagen and elastin, making the skin firmer.
A recent study notes a 35% increase in skin hydration and a 20% increase in elasticity after four weeks of daily use.
Soothing and anti-inflammatory properties
The phytosterols and polyphenols present reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby significantly reducing edema.
Support for healing
Research has shown accelerated healing of superficial burns with greater collagen density, stimulated by the active ingredients contained in the oil.
Recommended uses according to needs
- Dry, mature, or dehydrated skin Apply a few drops in the evening to cleansed skin, massaging gently to improve suppleness and radiance.
- Oily or blemished skin : non-comedogenic oil, absorbs quickly, regulates sebum production, and helps reduce acne scars.
- Hair and scalp : nourishing without being greasy, it moisturizes the lengths and soothes dry scalps, while regulating oily hair.
- Nails and cuticles : regular massage to strengthen, nourish the roots, and limit breakage.
Please note Its high cost is justified by the massive quantity of fruit needed to extract it and its low yield. To fully benefit from its effects, choose a certified, pure, organic oil that has been cold-pressed and stored away from light and heat.
