Sweating is a natural process that is essential to our bodies. However, for some people, it can become excessive and cause real discomfort in everyday life. What are the causes? How can it be effectively remedied?

Understanding excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is characterized by sweat production that exceeds the body's needs to maintain its normal temperature. This condition can be localized, mainly affecting the armpits, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, face, or scalp, or generalized, affecting the entire body.

Causes of hyperhidrosis

Several factors may be responsible for this:

  • Genetics : a family predisposition may play a role.
  • Neurological : hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system.
  • Medical : certain conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or infections.
  • Emotional : Stress, anxiety, or strong emotions can trigger or worsen excessive sweating.

Impact on quality of life

Hyperhidrosis can have a significant impact on social and professional life. It can cause embarrassment, lower self-esteem, and, in some cases, skin complications such as fungal or bacterial infections.

Solutions for managing excessive sweating

Several approaches can be considered to treat hyperhidrosis:

  • Botulinum toxin injections (Botox) They block nerve transmission to the sweat glands, reducing sweating for several months. 
  • Iontophoresis This technique involves using a low electrical current to reduce the activity of sweat glands, and is particularly effective for the hands and feet. 
  • Anticholinergic drugs They reduce sweat production by acting on the nervous system, but may have side effects. 
  • Surgery As a last resort, a sympathectomy may be considered to interrupt the nerve signals responsible for excessive sweating. 

Prevention and practical advice

To alleviate the symptoms of hyperhidrosis, it is recommended to:

  • Choose loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibers. 
  • Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol. 
  • Adopt stress management techniques such as meditation or yoga. 
  • Maintain strict hygiene to prevent skin infections. 

Deodorant or antiperspirant?

It is essential to distinguish between these two products:

  • Deodorant : Antimicrobial action, thanks to its ingredients (talc, kaolin or white clay, magnesite, etc.), it masks unpleasant odors by neutralizing bacteria on the skin without affecting sweat production. 
  • Antiperspirant : With its astringent action, it reduces or blocks perspiration by temporarily blocking the sweat glands, thanks in particular to aluminum salts, but their use is strongly discouraged and there are no other effective alternatives to date.
