6 Truths About Perfume You Didn't Know

Perfume is an essential part of any beauty routine. It dresses the skin with a signature scent, evokes memories, or reflects a mood. However, its use, composition, and effects are often misunderstood. Do you really know when to apply it, why it doesn't always last, or what ingredients are hidden in your bottle?
1. A formula that is more complex than it appears
Eau de parfum contains between 15 and 20% of aromatic substance concentrate diluted in alcohol (usually 70 or 90%). This proportion gives it an average longevity of 6 to 8 hours on the skin. It is distinguished by its olfactory pyramid:
- Top note : immediately noticeable, often fresh and light, evaporating quickly (citrus fruits, fruits).
- Middle note : appears after the first, more floral, woody, or musky scent has evaporated, and lasts for several hours.
- Background note : deep and persistent, it provides the final impression, ensuring the longevity of the fragrance (wood, amber, vanilla, etc.).
2. When should you apply perfume for optimal results?
The skin plays a key role in the diffusion of fragrance. Ideally, eau de parfum should be applied after showering, to clean, dry, and moisturized skin. Skin moisture helps to fix the scent molecules, prolonging their diffusion.
Strategic areas :
Spray on warm areas (wrists, neck, nape of the neck, crook of the elbows) to intensify the diffusion of the fragrance thanks to body temperature.
Frequency :
One or two sprays per day are sufficient. There is no need to overuse it: your nose quickly becomes accustomed to the scent (olfactory adaptation phenomenon), but it remains noticeable to others.
3. Precautions for use and common mistakes:
Avoid exposure to sunlight
Some perfume ingredients can be photosensitizing, causing skin reactions when exposed to sunlight. It is therefore advisable not to apply perfume immediately before sun exposure.
Rub your wrists
Avoid: this action breaks down the molecules and alters the composition of the perfume. Allow it to dry naturally.
Bathroom storage
Heat and humidity accelerate the degradation of components. Store your bottles in a cool place, away from light, preferably in their box.
4. Perfuming your hair: a bad idea?
Spraying classic perfume on your hair is not recommended: the alcohol it contains dries out the hair fibers and can irritate the scalp.
Safe alternative : hair mists Alcohol-free. They are specifically formulated for hair, often enriched with gentle, moisturizing ingredients, providing a long-lasting scent without drying effects.
5. Components to avoid and controversial substances:
- Phthalates (DEP) : used to fix fragrances, they are suspected of being endocrine disruptors.
- BHT / BHA : antioxidants that can cause allergic reactions and hormonal imbalances.
- Azo dyes : irritants, allergens, sometimes classified as carcinogens.
- Chemical UV filters : like avobenzone or octocrylene, controversial for their impact on health and the environment.
Tip: Choose fragrances with more transparent compositions that favor natural ingredients.
6. Headaches, allergies: when perfume becomes a nuisance
Some people suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or’osmophobia (aversion to strong odors). This can cause migraines, irritation, and respiratory problems.
These effects are not necessarily related to classic allergies, but rather to an exacerbated neurological reaction.
