What it says scientific literature.

Serum is the best-documented topical vehicle for delivering highly-concentrated active ingredients to the surface layers of the dermis. Three molecular families dominate the anti-aging literature - each acting on a distinct mechanism of photoaging.

01

Retinoids

Precursors of retinoic acid, they bind to nuclear receptors RAR/RXR and modulate the transcription of genes involved in collagen synthesis. Kong et al (2016) demonstrate overexpression of COL1A1/COL3A1 as early as 4 weeks (PubMed 26578346). Retinal requires only one oxidation step to the active form - superior bioavailability at equivalent concentration.

02

Copper peptides (GHK-Cu)

GHK-Cu stimulates the synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycans and modulates metalloproteinases (Pickart et al, 2015). Plasma concentration declines with age (~200 ng/mL at age 20 vs. ~80 ng/mL at age 60). Tolerance profile superior to retinoids - relevant option for contraindications.

03

Vitamin C

Cofactor of prolyl/lysyl hydroxylase (collagen biosynthesis), tyrosinase inhibitor and UV antioxidant. A 2023 review confirms efficacy on hyperpigmentation from 5 % at 6 months (PubMed 37128827). Pure L-ascorbic acid requires a pH <3.5 - lipophilic derivatives offer better stability.

Methodology - Dr Sylvain David

«The nine serums selected were extracted from the BeautyDecoded database according to three criteria: documented presence of the active ingredient in the INCI, anti-aging or blemish score above 85/100, and representativeness of user feedback.»

🌿 Retinoids - Retinol & Retinal

Serums with retinol and retinal

The best-documented active ingredients for collagen stimulation. To be applied in the evening, with mandatory SPF 50 photoprotection. Gradual introduction essential.

Retinal - superior bioavailability

Formula retinaldehyde measured at 0.2 %, retinal, combined with hydroxyapatite, ergothioneine (antioxidant), bisabolol and phytosterols. Requiring only a single oxidation step to active retinoic acid, retinal is more bioavailable than retinol at equivalent concentrations.

⚠️ Verdict sensitivity (score -2.85) Not suitable for sensitive skin. However, retinal is better tolerated than retinol at equivalent active concentrations, due to a shorter metabolic cascade.
User feedback
«Fluid texture superior to competing formulations. The pump format is appreciated for its hygienic qualities.»
«Gradual introduction widely mentioned in feedback to limit the adaptation phase.»
Summary - retinal in an accessible formula is the most interesting proposition in this category. Better bioavailability than retinol, slightly better tolerance. Outstanding value for money for a retinal.

Strategy overlay and chronobiology.

The three families have distinct application logics. An optimized routine can combine them without risk of cumulative irritation.

Vitamin C → in the morning

Under photoprotection SPF 50 - antioxidant synergy with UV filters (documented complementary effect). Pure L-ascorbic acid degrades in the light - opaque bottle essential.

Retinoids → in the evening

Photosensitivity and light instability require night-time application. SPF 50 mandatory the next morning. Introduction on 2 to 3 evenings a week for the first 4 weeks.

Peptides → morning or evening

Non-photosensitizing - flexible integration. Alternate with a retinoid in the evening (every other night) to reduce irritation while maintaining anti-aging action.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Retinoids contraindicated. Copper peptides (Nooance, The Ordinary Multi-Peptides): no documented contraindications. Vitamin C: compatible. Consult your doctor before any introduction.

Everything you need really know.

Can vitamin C and retinol be combined in the same routine?
Yes - by separating them chronologically. Vitamin C in the morning (antioxidant protection + photoprotection), retinol in the evening (collagen stimulation). Simultaneous application has not been documented as dangerous, but may increase irritation and reduce the efficacy of the two active ingredients through pH incompatibility.
Retinol or retinal - what's the difference?
Retinal (retinaldehyde) requires only one oxidation step to active retinoic acid, compared with two for retinol. At equivalent concentrations, its bioavailability is higher and slightly better tolerability. The Ordinary Retinal 0.2 % is comparable in efficacy to a higher concentration of retinol.
Are copper peptides as effective as retinoids?
Retinoids have a broader clinical track record on epidermal density and collagen synthesis. Copper peptides act on complementary pathways (angiogenesis, matrix repair) with superior tolerability. They are the’first-choice alternative in contraindication to retinoids, not a substitute with identical efficacy on deep wrinkles.
When do we start seeing results?
Clinical studies report histological effects of retinoids from 4 to 12 weeks. Vitamin C has an effect on hyperpigmentation from 6 months regular application at 5 %. Peptides act more progressively on comfort and repair - firming effects perceived between 4 and 8 weeks.
Do I need SPF 50 with vitamin C?
Yes - not because vitamin C is photosensitizing, but because photoprotection is the key to a healthy skin. an essential part of any anti-stain treatment. Without SPF 50, UV rays kick-start melanogenesis and partially cancel out the benefits of vitamin C. The vitamin C + SPF combination is synergistic: the antioxidant reinforces protection by neutralizing free radicals not blocked by filters.
What concentration of vitamin C should I choose?
Target enzyme saturation is reached at around 15 to 20 % of L-ascorbic acid - beyond this, efficacy does not increase, but potential irritation does. 10 to 15 % is the optimal range for most profiles. For beginners or sensitive skin, start at 5 % with an ester derivative (ascorbyl glucoside).
