Dermo-cosmetics - Comparative analysis

Best face cleansers scientific analysis by a doctor.

The first step in any cosmetic routine, the cleanser determines the tolerance and efficacy of subsequent skin care products. Ten universal references evaluated for every skin type - foaming gel, milk, cleansing oil, filtering cream.

Dr Sylvain David Plastic surgeon Update 2026 Reading: 18 min

Lhe cleaning process is the first step in any cosmetic routine and conditions the tolerance and efficacy of subsequent skin care products. This basic function, often neglected in favor of targeted active ingredients (serums, anti-aging creams, photoprotection), explains why cleansers play such a central role in dermatological recommendations. A poor choice of cleanser can jeopardize months of consistent cosmetic routine, through cumulative weakening of the cutaneous barrier and gradual sensitization to subsequent treatments.

The cleaner has a triple function: remove surface impurities (oxidized sebum, pollution, atmospheric particles), remove skin care products applied during the day (photoprotection, make-up), and prepare the skin for subsequent treatments without altering the cutaneous barrier1. This last dimension is the most delicate: an overly aggressive, lipid-removing cleanser removes not only impurities but also the physiological lipids essential to the barrier function, resulting in fragility and paradoxical dryness. A cleanser that is too gentle, on the other hand, may be insufficient to remove residues of photoprotection or stubborn make-up, justifying the strategy of double cleansing in the evening.

I.

Adapt to skin profile.

No cleanser is universally superior to any other. The best formulation is the one that precisely matches the individual skin profile and the component of the overall routine. Five main profiles guide your choice: oily acneic skin (salicylic acid foaming gels in rinse-off formulations), combination to oily skin (mild foaming gels with niacinamide), normal to oily multi-purpose skin (balanced foaming gels), normal to dry skin (surgras galenics with ceramides), dry to very dry skin (milks, cleansing oils, cleansing creams). In addition to these profiles, there are specific situations: sensitive skin with redness, atopic skin, skin after dermatological procedures, double evening cleansing.

II.

Three fundamentals formulation.

Regardless of skin profile, three technical criteria distinguish a quality cleanser from a mediocre formulation. Their understanding guides the reading of INCI lists.

Skin balance

Physiological pH

The skin's physiological pH is between 4.5 and 5.5, maintained by the hydrolipidic film. Neutral or alkaline pH cleansers (traditional soaps, certain conventional foaming gels) permanently upset this balance, generating tightness and cumulative fragility.

Functional core

Mild surfactants

Preferred: sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI), sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, sodium cocoamphoacetate, decyl glucoside, coco-glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine. Classic sulfates (SLS, SLES) in significant concentrations to be avoided on sensitive skin.

Repair during cleaning

Humectants & physiological lipids

Glycerin in second or third INCI position, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol to compensate for water loss. Biomimetic approach with ceramides, cholesterol and phytosphingosine to restore the lipid matrix.2.

III.

Ten strategies for formulation.

The analysis covered 166 facial cleansers referenced in the BeautyDecoded database. Formulations with a user rating of over 4.4 and a minimum number of reviews guaranteeing the reliability of qualitative feedback were selected. The ten references selected cover all major skin profiles, with distinctive formulation strategies: ceramide biomimetics, salicylic anti-imperfections, soothing prebiotics, atopic multi-use, mild or low pH K-beauty, innovative French sensoriality, enzymatic exfoliant. Dr Sylvain David's sensitivity rule was applied to each product to assess tolerance.

IV.

The ten cleaners withheld.

№ 01 - Biomimetic reference for combination to oily skin

CeraVe - Foaming Facial Cleanser

4,4/5 22 BeautyDecoded reviews - Target profile: combination to oily skin, biomimetic restoration, gentle daily use - Key assets: cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, glycerin, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, niacinamide, ceramide NP, AP, EOP, cholesterol, phytosphingosine, sodium hyaluronate.

Mechanisms of action

This formulation represents the «classic» version of the CeraVe range for oily skin, without comedolytic active ingredients but with a preserved biomimetic dimension. Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, the second INCI ingredient, provides a gentle foam that's particularly well tolerated. A significant concentration of niacinamide adds a moderate sebum-regulating dimension. The simultaneous presence of the three physiological ceramides with cholesterol and phytosphingosine restores the lipid matrix during cleansing, the brand's distinguishing feature. The absence of fragrance and SLS is a tolerance advantage. This formulation offers an excellent compromise between cleansing efficiency and preservation of the cutaneous barrier for combination to oily skin in a twice-daily routine.

✅ Verdict sensitivity (score +0.6)

Positive score: compatible with sensitive skin. The formulation has a favorable tolerance profile. On frankly dry skin, cleansing efficiency may be excessive for certain profiles, according to user feedback.

User reviews

Feedback is unanimous on the effectiveness of cleansing without damaging the skin barrier, the absence of post-rinse tightness, and the favorable quality/price ratio. Several users with combination to oily skin make it their twice-daily reference. One user with acne reports that it «doesn't irritate or dry out the skin». On the downside: several users report a drying effect over time, particularly on normal to dry skin. One user with sensitive combination skin found it too abrasive for her profile.

№ 02 - Biomimetic anti-imperfections

CeraVe - Anti-Imperfection Foaming Gel

4,5/5 33 reviews BeautyDecoded - Target profile: oily skin with imperfections, retention acne, combination to oily acneic skin - Key assets: sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, niacinamide, salicylic acid, gluconolactone, ceramide NP, AP, EOP, cholesterol.

Mechanisms of action

This formulation embodies the brand's biomimetic approach adapted to acne-prone skin. The surfactant base provides a gentle, non-delipidating foam. A significant concentration of niacinamide adds a sebum-regulating dimension. Salicylic acid, in sixth position, provides the comedolytic dimension in a rinse-off formulation, by dissolving obstructive corneocytes on the surface of the follicle.3. Gluconolactone (PHA) completes the exfoliating action with a moisturizing dimension. The simultaneous presence of three physiological ceramides with cholesterol sets this formulation apart from conventional anti-acne cleansers, with its restorative dimension. The absence of fragrance and SLS is a tolerance advantage.

Negative score between 0 and -2: potential risk of moderate irritation. The combination of salicylic acid, gluconolactone and niacinamide in significant concentrations justifies this classification. On dry skin, the formulation remains too active and drying.

User reviews

Feedback is mostly in agreement on the documented efficacy on blemishes, prevention of new pimples and overall satisfactory tolerance for combination to oily skin. Several users report a perceived improvement after several weeks' use, with pores tightened and marques reduced. Limitations: several users reported an excessive drying effect, particularly on sensitive-acneic or dry skin. One user with dry skin reported induced dry patches.

№ 03 - Versatile biomimetic K-beauty

Round Lab - 1025 Dokdo Cleanser

4,9/5 5 BeautyDecoded reviews - Target profile: normal to oily multi-purpose skin, gentle K-beauty with biomimetic dimension. Key assets: sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI), glycerin, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, coco-betaine, panthenol, allantoin, seawater, fructo-oligosaccharides, beta-glucan, ceramide NP, hyaluronic acid, amino acid complex (NMF).

Mechanisms of action

This Korean formulation embodies the modern approach to gentle cleansing with a biomimetic dimension. Sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI) is the reference surfactant for sensitive skin, derived from coconut oil with a favorable tolerance profile. Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate and coco-betaine complete the surfactant base in gentle synergy. Glycerin, in third position with a significant concentration, provides the main humectant dimension. Panthenol and allantoin reinforce the reparative dimension. Fructo-oligosaccharides add a prebiotic dimension. Beta-glucan, ceramide NP and the amino acid complex (glycine, glutamic acid, serine, alanine, lysine, arginine, threonine, proline) partially reproduce the composition of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF).4. This biomimetic strategy sets this formulation apart from conventional K-beauty cleansers, thanks to its high concentration of repairing active ingredients.

Slightly negative score: theoretical potential risk of irritation, mainly due to the presence of chamomile essential oil. This verdict contrasts with the unanimously positive user feedback on tolerance, suggesting excellent performance in real-life use despite the reserved INCI score. On moderately sensitive skin, tolerance remains favorable according to the majority of user feedback.

User reviews

The limited number of returns (5 reviews) calls for caution in interpretation, but the very high average rating (4.9/5) and the convergence of comments are favorable signals. Several users with sensitive skin described it as «the perfect cleanser»: gel texture that transforms into a light foam, gentle, deep-cleansing action. One feedback states that one dab is enough for the face, which corresponds to an economical formulation. Several users mentioned that the cleansing of photoprotection residues is effective, an important point for the evening routine. The absence of tightness after rinsing is unanimously recognized.

№ 04 - K-beauty pH low morning

Cosrx - Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

4,7/5 6 reviews BeautyDecoded - Target profile: oily to combination skin, low pH morning cleanser, mild acne-prone skin. Key assets: cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, soothing botanical extracts (Styrax japonicus, Cryptomeria japonica, Nelumbo nucifera, Pinus palustris), Saccharomyces ferment, allantoin, betaine salicylate, tea tree essential oil.

Mechanisms of action

This Korean formulation embodies the low pH cleaning concept (announced between 5.0 and 6.0) popularized by the Cosrx brand. The surfactant base combines cocamidopropyl betaine (INCI number two) and sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, two particularly well-tolerated mild surfactants. This combination generates a moderate rather than abundant foam, characteristic of physiological pH formulations. The presence of Saccharomyces ferment adds a postbiotic dimension, modulating the skin microbiome. The numerous soothing botanical extracts (Japanese cryptomeria, lotus, swamp pine, David's elm) reinforce the anti-inflammatory dimension. Betaine salicylate is a mild derivative of salicylic acid, providing moderate comedolytic action in a rinse-off formulation. Tea tree essential oil provides a secondary antibacterial dimension, but is the main theoretical intolerance factor.

Negative score between 0 and -2: potential risk of moderate irritation, mainly due to the presence of tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil) and betaine salicylate. On strictly sensitive skin with reactive redness, avoid use. On moderately sensitive skin with an oily component, tolerance remains favorable. The formulation is strictly intended for combination to oily profiles: on dry skin, the drying effect may be excessive.

User reviews

Feedback was unanimous on the effectiveness of the cleanser for combination to oily skin, the absence of tightness after use, and the favorable quality/price ratio. One user reports notable effectiveness on small pimples, with no drying effect. Another appreciates the sensation of freshness and purified skin. Several users point out that the formulation doesn't lather much, a feature consistent with the low pH advertised. On the downside, a number of users report a peculiar scent that they find moderately pleasant, probably due to the combination of botanical extracts and tea tree essential oil.

№ 05 - French soothing prebiotic

Bioderma - Créaline Soothing Foaming Gel

4,7/5 20 BeautyDecoded reviews - Target profile: sensitive combination to oily skin, reactive skin, gentle daily use - versatile. Key assets: sodium cocoamphoacetate, propanediol, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, coco-glucoside, mannitol, xylitol, rhamnose, fructo-oligosaccharides, tocopherol.

Mechanisms of action

This French formulation combines a gentle surfactant base with a distinctive prebiotic complex. Sodium cocoamphoacetate, the second INCI ingredient, provides a gentle foam that is particularly well tolerated on reactive skin. Prebiotic sugars (mannitol, xylitol, rhamnose, fructo-oligosaccharides) positively modulate the skin microbiome, a dimension increasingly documented for modulating skin sensitivity. Tolerance benefits include the absence of fragrance, the absence of fragrance allergens and the presence of tocopherol. This formulation specifically targets profiles where oily skin is associated with documented reactivity or sensitivity.

Several users use it as a second cleanser after a cleansing oil (double cleansing).

№ 06 - Very sensitive dry skin reference

La Roche-Posay - Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser

5,0/5 5 BeautyDecoded reviews - Target profile: sensitive dry skin, intolerance to foaming cleansers, gentle daily make-up removal -. Key assets: water, ethylhexyl palmitate, glycerin, dipropylene glycol, carbomer.

Mechanisms of action

This French pharmaceutical formulation embodies the pure minimalist approach Only 8 ingredients, no fragrance, no sulfates, no strong surfactants. The structure is based on a water/oil emulsion centered on ethylhexyl palmitate (a light fatty ester) and humectant glycerin. The functions of this cleansing milk galenic are similar to those of a cream cleanser: apply to dry skin with gentle massaging movements, then remove by dabbing with a cotton pad or rinsing lightly with water. The total absence of strong surfactants makes it the reference option for skin that is strictly intolerant to conventional cleansers. This formulation is part of La Roche-Posay's Toleriane philosophy, dedicated to hyper-reactive profiles.

№ 09 - Reactive acne European reference

Colibri Skincare - Purifying Gel Cleanser

5,0/5 4 reviews BeautyDecoded - Target profile: oily to combination skin with reactive acne, double evening cleansing, German brand - Key assets: decyl glucoside, maltooligosyl glucoside, glycerin, salicylic acid, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, cocamidopropyl betaine, copper gluconate, zinc gluconate, sodium lauroyl oat amino acids.

Mechanisms of action

This German formulation proposes a distinctive approach combining mild surfactants and targeted sebum-regulating active ingredients. Decyl glucoside, the second INCI ingredient (derived from sugar), is a particularly well-tolerated surfactant. Maltooligosyl glucoside adds a humectant dimension, forming a moisturizing film after rinsing. Glycerin, fifth in the INCI list, completes the humectant effect. Salicylic acid, in sixth position, provides the comedolytic dimension in a rinse-off formulation, at moderate cosmetic concentration. Copper and zinc gluconates are documented seboregulating and antibacterial active ingredients, particularly relevant for acne-prone skin. Oat-derived sodium lauroyl oat amino acids provide a secondary soothing dimension. Cocamidopropyl betaine completes the surfactant base. The absence of fragrance is a tolerance advantage. User reviews

The limited number of returns (4 reviews) calls for caution in interpretation, but the maximum average score reflects a very positive convergence. One user with sensitive combination skin and reactive acne described it as «perfect» and recommended it. Another uses it as a second cleanser for oily skin, with no dryness or tightness. The German brand's quality/price ratio is mentioned as favorable. On the limitations side: a user with sensitive combination skin reports that the product makes her skin too dry on its own, but that the result is perfect when used after the make-up remover oil from the same range. This important nuance illustrates the formulation's positioning as a second step in double cleansing rather than as a single cleanser.

№ 10 - French enzymatic exfoliant

Garancia - Pschitt Magique Nouvelle Peau Grain-free Micropeeling

4,8/5 34 reviews BeautyDecoded - Target profile: uneven-grained skin, gentle enzymatic exfoliation, weekly complement to routine - Key assets: glycerin, coco-glucoside, lemon extracts, floral waters (Damask rose, cornflower, witch hazel), Lactobacillus, papain, alginate.

Mechanisms of action

This French formulation embodies a distinctive approach to enzymatic exfoliation in a rinse-off formulation. Papain, a proteolytic enzyme extracted from papaya, selectively degrades peptide bonds between desquamated corneocytes without damaging living keratinocytes, setting this strategy apart from conventional AHAs and BHAs. The presence of Lactobacillus adds a probiotic dimension, modulating the microbiome. Multiple floral waters reinforce the soothing and astringent dimensions. The characteristic air-foam galenic structure offers a distinctive sensoriality. This formulation is positioned as a cleanser-exfoliant for moderate use (two to three times a week) rather than as a replacement for a daily cleanser. The presence of fragrance is the main potential intolerance factor.

VI.

The gesture just.

A consistent cleaning routine is based on three principles: twice-daily cleaning, non-aggressive application technique, and adaptation to the component of the overall routine. Morning cleansing removes sebum oxidized during the night and residues of nighttime skincare products. Evening cleansing should remove pollution, photoprotection and any make-up. For make-up-affected skin or skin with resistant photoprotection, double cleansing in the evening is an appropriate strategy: cleansing oil or cleansing balm in the first stage to dissolve greasy substances, followed by a water-based cleanser in the second stage.

Most products (foaming gels, cleansing oils, foams) are applied to damp skin, using gentle circular movements lasting 30 to 60 seconds. Minimalist cleansing milks and creams (such as Toleriane) should be applied to dry skin to take full advantage of their emollient properties. Rinsing with lukewarm rather than hot water is still recommended: hot water dilates capillaries and increases insensible water loss, which is particularly harmful on dry or sensitive skin. Pat dry with a soft towel to preserve the skin barrier.

Immediate application of the moisturizing serum or cream (on skin that is still slightly damp) optimizes water absorption in the stratum corneum through a humectant-occlusive superposition effect. This «treatment on wet skin», This is particularly relevant for dry, sensitive skin.

L'rinse water, an often overlooked factor

The quality of the rinse water has a significant influence on skin tolerance in sensitive profiles. Hard water (rich in calcium and magnesium) can generate additional dryness and a feeling of tightness after rinsing, particularly in dry or reactive skin.

Several pragmatic strategies are available: final rinse with thermal water spray, use of a non-rinseable cleaner (cleansing milk dabbed onto absorbent cotton), or installation of a shower filter for particularly reactive profiles.

This often overlooked dimension is a frequent explanatory factor for persistent intolerance to successive cleaners.

VII.

When visit.

Skin cleansing has objective limitations. The severe acne (cystic, conglobata, fulminans), resistant hormone-dependent acne and compound dermatoses (severe atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis, allergen-specific contact eczema, seborrheic dermatitis) require a dedicated medical assessment, which is beyond the scope of this cosmetic analysis. Cleansers are an important part of the routine, but they alone cannot resolve an active dermatosis.

A new, persistent or severe skin reactivity after a change of cleanser, individual intolerance requiring a change of formulation or dermatological evaluation should be raised. Consultation with a physician can help to differentiate between modular cosmetic presentations and established dermatoses requiring a specific therapeutic approach.
