What is "POLYGONUM CUSPIDATUM ROOT EXTRACT" and what does it do?

Role: PLANT EXTRACTS

Family: PLANT EXTRACTS Japanese knotweed

Comedogenic index: 0

Polygonum cuspidatum root extract, also known as Japanese knotweed, Mexican bamboo, and in traditional Chinese medicine as Hu Zhang, is a plant whose root is a good source of the powerful polyphenolic antioxidant trans-resveratrol, considered to be the most bioavailable form of resveratrol.

Not only does this plant counter free radicals before they can damage the skin, it also reduces signs of irritation.

Research has also shown that this plant extract can inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. These are collagen-damaging proteins and fats that form in the skin in response to exposure to sugars. Left unchecked, AGEs can contribute to the appearance of wrinkles and loss of firmness.

Trans-resveratrol has been shown to attenuate hyperpigmentation when used at concentrations of 1% or higher; lower levels of Polygonum cuspidatum root in skin care remain viable for antioxidant, soothing, and other benefits.
