L‘oil cleanser is the first step in the evening double clean, a method popularized by Korean routines and now standard in dermo-cosmetics for profiles that wear make-up or resistant photoprotection. Its function is distinct from that of a conventional cleanser: whereas an aqueous gel or foam removes water-soluble impurities (oxidized sebum, perspiration, water-soluble pollution particles), make-up-removing oil dissolves greasy substances that an aqueous cleanser cannot effectively remove (mascara, foundation, resistant photoprotection, lip balms, compacted sebum).
The physico-chemical principle is based on solubility: «the like dissolves the like». The fatty substances present in make-up (esters, waxes, silicones, lipophilic pigments) dissolve in an oily matrix rather than in an aqueous medium. Modern make-up-removing oil incorporates an emulsifying dimension: applied to dry skin to solubilize make-up, it transforms on contact with water into an easily rinsed milky emulsion, which simultaneously eliminates the dissolved fatty substances and the oil itself.
The logic of double cleaning.
Double cleansing in the evening is an appropriate strategy for profiles wearing make-up or water-resistant photoprotection filters.1. The two-stage sequence offers complete cleaning without the use of a single aggressive product.
Cleansing oil
Apply to dry skin and hands, massage for 30-60 seconds to solubilize greasy substances (mascara, foundation, resistant photoprotection). Gradually add water to activate the milky emulsion, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Aqueous cleanser
Apply a foaming gel, gentle foam or cream cleanser to damp skin to remove water-soluble residues, pollution particles and oxidized sebum. Rinse and dab with a soft towel.
The use of a cleansing oil alone may be sufficient for makeup-free or lightly made-up profiles, particularly for sensitive dry skin intolerant to foaming cleansers. On acne-prone skin, however, this practice remains inadvisable due to possible oily residues that can generate follicular obstruction in high-comedogenic profiles. Practical rule : if make-up is applied during the day, double cleansing is preferable.
Three essential components.
A modern cleansing oil combines three families of complementary ingredients. Their selection determines the effectiveness of make-up removal and the quality of rinsing.
Oil phase
Vegetable oils (sunflower, jojoba, castor, grapeseed, olive, sweet almond) or emulsifiable synthetic esters (ethylhexyl palmitate, decyl oleate, caprylic/capric triglyceride). Modern formulations combine both to optimize efficacy and tolerance.
Emulsifiers
Polyglyceryl-4 oleate, sorbeth-30 tetraoleate, polyglyceryl-2 sesquioleate, PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate. Their concentration determines the quality of rinsing: insufficient oil leaves a residual greasy film.
Antioxidants & active ingredients
Tocopherol (vitamin E) as a reference, present in virtually all modern formulations. Soothing botanical extracts (Centella, ginseng, grape-seed polyphenols, licorice derivatives) as cosmetic supplements.

Five strategies for formulation.
The analysis covered 40 make-up-removing oils referenced in the BeautyDecoded database (liquid formulations, excluding solid to semi-solid balms treated in a dedicated analysis). Formulations with a user rating above 4.2 and a minimum threshold of 5 reviews were selected to guarantee the reliability of qualitative feedback.

This Korean formulation embodies the hanbang approach (traditional Korean medicine) applied to make-up removal. The oily matrix is centered on three noble plant oils: soybean oil (INCI number one), olive oil and sunflower oil. This combination is loaded with essential fatty acids (linoleic acid, oleic acid) renowned for their skin tolerance and compatibility with the hydrolipidic film. Sorbeth-30 tetraoleate is the main emulsifier, transforming the product into an emulsion. Panax ginseng seed oil adds the brand's characteristic revitalizing dimension. Numerous botanical extracts (Eclipta prostrata, Melia azadirachta, Coccinia indica, Solanum melongena, Moringa oleifera, Curcuma longa, Ocimum sanctum, Corallina officinalis) reinforce the antioxidant and soothing dimensions. The correct application of a cleansing oil is based on three fundamental principles: application to dry skin and hands, massage for 30 to 60 seconds, emulsify with lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly. The most common mistake is to apply to damp skin: the oil emulsifies immediately on contact with the water on the skin, eliminating its ability to dissolve greasy make-up substances. This error explains many user reports of incomplete make-up removal or a poorly rinsed «milky» effect.
The technique in three steps
Reference quantity : two pumps or pschitts of product for face and neck. Massage over the entire face in gentle circular movements, paying particular attention to the eye area for mascara and the contours of the nose for photoprotection residue.
Emulsion : gradually add lukewarm water to visualize the characteristic milky transformation. If this transformation does not take place, the formulation is probably a pure, non-emulsifiable cosmetic oil, unsuitable for make-up removal.
Rinse : rinse thoroughly and repeatedly to remove all traces of emulsion. For sensitive skin, a final rinse with thermal spring water spray can complete the removal process for profiles that are particularly reactive to limescale. The presence of a residual greasy film after rinsing indicates either excessive product quantity, insufficient rinsing or a poorly emulsifying formulation: in all cases, this film must be removed by a second water-based cleansing to avoid follicular obstruction or cumulative irritation.
When avoid Cleansing oil.
Cleansing oil is a relevant tool in the cosmetic routine of profiles that wear make-up or resistant photoprotection, but has objective limitations. On severe active acne skin, With high-comedogenic profiles, the use of an oil can lead to follicular obstruction, even with a theoretically non-comedogenic formulation. On atopic skin with a weakened cutaneous barrier, the make-up remover dimension may prove too active: a cleansing milk or micellar water is preferable in these contexts. On strictly makeup-free skin without resistant photoprotection, the use of a makeup-removing oil is unnecessary, and may be a superfluous step in the routine.
The use of make-up remover oil for contact lens wearers or profiles presenting chronic blepharitis require special attention: residual oil contact with the conjunctiva can generate temporary blurred vision or contact lens intolerance. For these profiles, cleansing milks or micellar waters are preferable, at least for the eye area. New, persistent or severe skin reactivity after a change of cleansing oil should suggest an individual intolerance requiring a change of formulation or dermatological evaluation.
