What is "BENTONITE" and what does it do?
Role: MATTIFYING/ABSORBENT
Family: CLAY
Comedogenic index: 0
Bentonite is an aluminum phyllosilicate clay with excellent absorbent properties. Its name comes from the region where the largest source is located: Fort Benton, Wyoming.
As a clay, bentonite is often used to absorb excess sebum and exfoliate the skin. It has also been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown bentonite to be effective in soothing poison ivy dermatitis and diaper dermatitis in infants. Bentonite has also been shown to act as a barrier against toxic compounds on the skin.
Sunscreens containing bentonite show higher water resistance and stay on the skin longer. Sunscreens containing bentonite are also more effective and better at absorbing UV light.
Bentonite is naturally formed from volcanic ash and several natural weathering/hydrothermal processes.
