Role: CONSERVATIVE

Family: ALLERGEN

Comedogenic index: 0

Benzyl alcohol, also known as phenylmethyl alcohol, is a component commonly used in cosmetology.

This is one of those elements that help your cosmetics not to deteriorate too quickly, otherwise known as a preservative. It can be naturally present in fruits and teas, but can also be synthetically manufactured.

It must be combined with other effective preservatives, such as potassium sorbate, to ensure a broad spectrum of action.
In high concentrations, it can be irritating to the skin.
Benzyl alcohol has both antibacterial and antioxidant properties. These properties help extend the shelf life of products. Benzyl alcohol is a solvent and helps dissolve other ingredients. It can also improve texture and ease of application.

It is listed among the 26 allergens regulated in Europe for formulating beauty care products.
