What is BENZYL BENZOATE and what does it do?
Role: PERFUM
Family: ALLERGEN
Comedogenic index: 0
Benzyl benzoate is a volatile fragrance ingredient and solvent with documented skin irritation effects. As one study points out, benzyl benzoate's small molecular size enables it to penetrate deeply, disrupting the skin's naturally protective lipids and then exacerbating the sensitization reaction it triggers.
Despite its potential for skin irritation, benzyl benzoate is used in a wide variety of personal care products, including baby products, make-up, hair products and skin care products.
Benzyl benzoate occurs naturally in plants such as Peruvian balsam, plumeria and cinnamon leaf, but can also be created synthetically for use in cosmetics. It results from the condensation of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. Depending on the source, the aroma of benzyl benzoate can have floral, herbaceous or sweet fruit notes.
As with all fragrance ingredients, the potential for skin irritation is reduced if benzyl benzoate is included in the formula in ultra-low quantities (which means you'll see it at the bottom of the ingredients list). Benzyl Benzoate is created from the condensation of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. It is used as a preservative, solvent, and has a floral/balsamic odor in large quantities.
As a preservative, Benzyl Benzoate acts against bacteria and fungi. It is often used to treat scabies and lice in medicine.
Solvents are used to hold ingredients together in a product. They can help dissolve ingredients into stable bases, or distribute ingredients evenly throughout the product.
Due to its fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate can be sensitizing and may cause contact dermatitis. It is a known EU allergen. We recommend consulting a professional if you have any concerns.
Benzyl Benzoate can be found naturally in cranberries and peaches.
