What is "C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE" and what does it do?

Role: EMOLLIENT/SOLVENT

Family:

Comedogenic index: 0

This is a frequently used emollient with a light, silky feel. It is very gentle on skin and eyes, and spreads easily and pleasantly. It is often used in sunscreens as it is also an excellent solvent for sunscreen agents.

C12-15 alkyl benzoate is used as an emollient (skin softener, moisture sealant), texture improver and dispersant in cosmetics. This common synthetic ingredient is an ester soluble in oil and oil-like ingredients, and imparts a silky, non-greasy finish to products.
The exceptional solubility of C12-15 alkyl benzoate is one of the main reasons why it is used in many sunscreens, as it helps to keep active ingredients evenly dispersed throughout the formula. Research also indicates that it has the ability to increase the sun protection factor (SPF) of certain sunscreen actives.

Another advantage of C12-15 alkyl benzoate is its occlusive properties, which help the skin retain moisture over a longer period than some other emollients, which give shorter-lasting results.
