What is "DISODIUM EDTA" and what does it do?
Role: CHELATOR
Family:
Comedogenic index: 0
Disodium EDTA is one of the salt forms of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, commonly known as EDTA. This ingredient is used both in cosmetics and as a food additive.
Chelating agent function
Disodium EDTA acts primarily as a chelating agent in cosmetics. It prevents formula ingredients from binding with minerals, which may be present in water or other ingredients. This action enhances the stability of cosmetic formulas and facilitates the work of preservatives, as EDTA ingredients bind with the mineral ions that micro-organisms need to remain intact.
Use in Cosmetics and Food
As well as being used in make-up, skin care and hair care products, Disodium EDTA is also a food additive.
Safety in Cosmetics
According to several studies conducted by the Cosmetics Review Board, Disodium EDTA is considered safe for use in cosmetic products. At concentrations commonly used in commercial cosmetics, it is neither a skin sensitizer nor a carcinogen, and does not penetrate through the skin.
Environmental impact
However, it is important to note that Disodium EDTA is not biodegradable and has a significant environmental impact.
