What is "METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL" and what does it do?
Role: Hybrid UV filter
Family: TINOSORB M,UV filter UVB, UVA SHORT, UVA LONG
Comedogenic index: 0
TINOSORB M is a "hybrid" sunscreen, which means it's halfway between physical filters (which partly reflect the sun's rays) and organic filters (which absorb the rays, as do most sunscreens).
Skin Whitening Effect
Its hybrid nature can leave a white residue on the skin, particularly visible on darker skin tones.
Formulation
Produced in small particles, it is added to the aqueous phase of sunscreens to create lightweight sunscreens, unlike mineral micropigments added to the oil phase.
It is relatively recent, having been approved by the European Union in 2000.
This is a new-generation UV filter and, like its sister product Trinosorb S, is not available in the USA.
It offers excellent broad-spectrum coverage (280-400 nm, including protection against UVB as well as UVA) with maximum protection at 305 nm and 360 nm, and is highly photostable. It can also help stabilize other less stable sunscreens, such as octinoxate, and is generally compatible with other UV filters.
