What is "PETROLATUM" and what does it do?

Role: OCCLUSIVE

Family: Mineral oil

Comedogenic index: 0

Petrolatum, better known as petroleum jelly or petroleum jelly, is a by-product of crude oil refining, also known as petroleum. It consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons, but with longer carbon chains (C18-90+).

Vaseline's special feature is its effectiveness as an occlusive agent. Although the occlusivity of mineral oil is similar to that of vegetable oils, Vaseline stands out. It forms a barrier on the skin's surface, preventing insensible water loss more effectively than any other ingredient.

Advantages :

Vaseline can be useful in the treatment of burns, limiting water loss in burn victims.
It is also beneficial for people with dry or very dry skin.
Disadvantages :

The humid environment created by Vaseline can encourage the growth of fungi and bacteria.
Due to its thick, oily texture, it may not be suitable for combination or oily skin.
As regards the safety of petroleum jelly, the information is similar to that for mineral oil. There is no evidence that cosmetic-grade Vaseline is carcinogenic. It does not penetrate the skin but remains on its surface, which minimizes health risks.
