Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract is a source of natural antioxidants for the skin.
Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract comes from a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region. It may have antioxidant benefits for the skin, but its aromatic components may cause sensitivity.
However, in most skincare products, the amount of rosemary extract is unlikely to present a risk, and rosemary extract is much less problematic for the skin than rosemary oil because the extract generally contains few, if any, of the volatile fragrance components of rosemary oil.
Research has shown that rosmarinic acid, one of the components of rosemary extract, has a soothing effect on the skin, making it useful in products for chronically sensitive or temporarily sensitized skin.
In addition to rosmarinic acid, other key antioxidants in rosemary leaf include caffeic acid, carnosol and carnosic acid. All these elements help neutralize harmful oxidative molecules before they can cause deeper damage to the skin. Best of all, they are effective in both water- and oil-based formulas.
Rosemary leaf extract can also aid the preservative system of a cosmetic formula, allowing less use of conventional preservatives which helps make certain products more tolerable for those with sensitive skin.
