What is "THIOCTIC ACID" and what does it do?
Role: ASSETS
Family: ANTIOXIDANT
Comedogenic index: 0
Thiotic acid, also known as alpha-lipoic acid, is a naturally occurring antioxidant. It is soluble in both water-rich and lipid-rich media, making it versatile and enabling it to interact with many types of harmful free radicals as well as other beneficial antioxidants.
ALA appears to be an excellent choice for topical use, as studies show that it can rapidly penetrate the skin, where it is converted into dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), an even more potent antioxidant molecule.
A 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study from 2003 confirmed that using a cream containing 5% ALA can reduce skin roughness.
Overall, ALA is certainly an excellent, research-proven antioxidant, but if your skin is sensitive, higher concentrations may not be suitable.
