Triethyl citrate is produced by esterification of citric acid with ethanol.

In cosmetics, this ingredient is often used in deodorants as an alternative to aluminum salts. Its ability to inhibit the enzymatic breakdown of perspiration components makes it an excellent active ingredient in the fight against body odor. Triethyl citrate also has antibacterial properties.

A study published in 2016 highlights the bactericidal properties of a mixture of peptides and triethyl citrate towards C. acnes, which can be exploited in the field of topical acne treatment.
Triethyl citrate also acts as a skin pH modifier.
