In the field of skin care, certain ingredients stand out for their exceptional properties. The beta-glucan, although less well known than others, offers remarkable benefits for skin health. Derived mainly from’oats, This natural polysaccharide is known for its moisturizing, soothing, and regenerating properties.

What is beta-glucan?

Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide, which is a long chain of glucose molecules, naturally present in certain grains such as oats, barley, as well as in mushrooms and yeasts. In cosmetics, it is mainly extracted from oats (Oat.) for its beneficial properties on the skin.

Unlike some synthetic active ingredients, beta-glucan is completely biodegradable, well tolerated by the skin, and acts on several levels of the skin.

Properties of beta-glucan

Deep moisturizing

Beta-glucan acts as a humectant, drawing water to the skin and helping to maintain optimal hydration. It also forms a protective film on the surface of the epidermis, reducing water loss and strengthening the skin barrier. Some studies suggest that beta-glucan may be up to 20% more hydrating than hyaluronic acid.

Unlike some large molecules that remain on the surface, beta-glucan is able to penetrate deep into the dermis. This allows it to act on cell regeneration and collagen synthesis.

Soothing, anti-inflammatory effect

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, beta-glucan helps to soothe irritation, redness, and itching. It is particularly beneficial for sensitive skin prone to conditions such as eczema or dermatitis.

In addition, it promotes skin tissue healing and accelerates natural repair, particularly in cases of minor burns and for skin sensitized by cosmetic or medical treatments.

Antioxidant and anti-aging properties

Beta-glucan has antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from damage caused by free radicals. It also stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity and firmness, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Use in cosmetics

Beta-glucan is incorporated into various skin care products, including:

  • Serums and moisturizing creams.
  • Soothing masks.
  • After-sun care and post-treatment formulas (peeling, laser, etc.).
  • Products for sensitive skin or skin prone to redness.

It is generally well tolerated and can be used daily, morning and evening.

Storage and precautions for use

Beta-glucan is a stable ingredient that does not require any special storage precautions. It is considered safe and has no known adverse effects. However, as with any cosmetic product, it is recommended to perform a skin test beforehand if you have very reactive skin.

A serious alternative to hyaluronic acid?

Yes, especially for sensitive skin or skin in need of active repair. Whereas hyaluronic acid mainly acts on the surface, beta-glucan goes further, combining hydration, soothing, protection, and biological stimulation. It can be used alone or in synergy with other active ingredients such as niacinamide, centella asiatica or ceramides.
