L'ecobiology - a coherent formulating philosophy.

Founded in 1977 by Jean-Noël Thorel, Bioderma has built each formula around one principle: the skin has its own defense mechanisms (skin microbiome, acid pH, lipid barrier). Cosmetology must support these mechanisms, not bypass them. In practice: gentle surfactants that respect the hydrolipidic film, physiological pH 4.5-5.5, exclusion of alcohol and preservatives that disrupt the microbiome.

01

The skin microbiome at the heart of formulas

The cutaneous microbiome is the set of microorganisms that physiologically colonize the skin. epidermal staphylococcus, the main commensal bacterium, produces antimicrobial substances that combat pathogens. Disrupting it with aggressive cleansers or alcohol increases vulnerability to skin infection and inflammation.

02

The invention of micellar water (1991)

A micelle is a spherical nanostructure made up of surfactants: hydrophilic head + lipophilic tail. In water, they organize themselves into spheres that capture greasy impurities (make-up, sebum, pollution). no rubbing, no alcohol, no rinsing required. Bioderma has spent years optimizing the selectivity of its micelles for sensitive skin.

Editorial reading

«Bioderma's ecobiology is a biologically coherent formulation philosophy. We don't soothe sensitive skin by assaulting it with strong active ingredients - we support it by letting it recover its natural mechanisms. This is precisely what Sensibio formulas do.»

The science of Bioderma micelles.

Three types of micelles, three distinct selectivities. The difference can't be seen - it can be measured on sensitive, atopic skin.

Micelle type Structure Action on the skin
Sensibio H2O Skin lipid-specific surfactants Make-up, impurities - without altering the hydrolipidic film
Sebium H2O Identical + Sebum-reducing Fluidactiv Make-up + excess sebum + qualitative standardization
Generic micellar waters Identical structure, less selective surfactants Same action - lower skin selectivity

The six Bioderma ranges, each its own target.

Organized by skin profile: each problem has its own specific formulation philosophy.

range Main target Formulating philosophy
Créaline / Sensibio Sensitive, reactive skin Ecobiology: respecting the microbiome and natural defenses
Sebium Oily, combination and acne-prone skin Fluidactiv: normalize sebum quality (not just reduce it)
Atoderm Dry, atopic and eczematous skin Lipid biomimetics: reconstituting intercellular cement
Cicabio Injured skin, post-treatment Active repair: accelerating epidermal regeneration
Photoderm Sun protection for sensitive skin High tolerance: stable filters, tested for reactive skin
Hydrabio Dehydrated skin Aquagénium patent: stimulating cutaneous aquaporins

range Créaline / Sensibio - sensitive skins

The flagship range. Four products based on ecobiology and respect for the microbiome - from make-up remover to serum, with an anti-redness nugget and a polarizing product.

First cleaner

Créaline Micellar Cleansing Oil

★★★★☆ 4,22/5 (38 reviews) ~14 € / 150 ml
TOP - First make-up cleanser

The micellar oil format is most effective on oily make-up and water-resistant sunscreens - where conventional micellar waters show their limitations. Dry skin score 84 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Oily skin score 0 - to be avoided on very seborrheic skin.

✅ Sensitivity verdict Suitable for sensitive skin (score: +0.25). The absence of fragrance and alcohol, combined with Bioderma's micellar selectivity, makes it a relevant option even for reactive profiles.
«Créaline Micellar Oil is Bioderma's best first cleanser for normal to dry skin wearing make-up or resistant SPF. Sensitivity score +0.25: no skin contraindications. Oily skin score 0: strictly excluded from this profile - opt for Sébium H2O instead. Emulsifiers allow for clean rinsing without residual film - an advantage over pure plant oils».»

★★★★★«Effective and good value for money. No greasy effect after rinsing.»
★★★★★«Does not sting the eyes, removes all types of makeup very well.»
★★★★«Transforms into milk on contact with water - top texture. Removes all types of makeup perfectly.»
★★★★«Double cleansing for combination skin: ideal as a first step. Fair price.»
Verdict - TOP. Optimal first cleanser for resistant make-up. Sensitivity score +0.25. Avoid on oily skin (score 0).

Affordable price (€15) for a quality light buttery texture. A relevant option for profiles with chronic redness or early-onset couperose. Sensitive skin serum

Créaline Defensive Serum

★★★½☆ 3,55/5 (10 reviews) ~25 € / 30 ml

⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -0.50). Consistent with user feedback: many report unexpected irritation or greasiness. The presence of squalane may be poorly tolerated on certain reactive skins.
«Sérum Défensive partially disappoints - score of 3.55/5 and slightly negative sensitive skin score (-0.50) for a serum positioned precisely on this profile. The active ingredients are interesting (carnosine, tetrapeptide-10), but the formula with squalane and fragmented HA may not be suitable for all sensitive skin types. Test on a small area before using. For profiles that tolerate it, it is useful as routine support in addition to a corrective active ingredient.»
User feedback
★★★★★«I really like it - I use it before my moisturizer as a replacement for my AH serum in winter. Richer and more moisturizing.»
★★★★«Very gentle, moisturizing and soothing. Calms redness very well.»
★★★«Irritates my skin. I'm disappointed - I don't know if it's the squalane or the fragmented HA. Too bad.»
★★★«Too greasy - persistent greasy feeling on my skin. Not repurchased.»
★★★«Warning: contains squalane, not suitable for all sensitive skins.»
Verdict - Low score (3.55/5) for a serum for sensitive skin. Interesting active ingredients (carnosine + tetrapeptide-10) but polarizing formula. Test before adopting.

Light moisturizer N-G

Light-textured gel-cream: mannitol (moisturizing sugar), xylitol, rhamnose. Normal to oily skin score 91 - optimal profile. ⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -0.75). User rating (4.69/5 out of 8 reviews) positive overall - lightness, no unpleasant fragrance, good daily moisturizing.
«Hydrabio Gel Crème is the Bioderma cream for normal to oily skin looking for light hydration without excess. Its normal-to-oily skin score of 91 and non-sticky gel texture make it a solid routine base. Dry skin score 56: insufficient for dry profiles requiring a richer cream. Disadvantage reported in reviews: the cream can be difficult to extract at the end of the tube.»
User feedback
★★★★★«For 3 years in the evening: really moisturizes my skin. Part of my routine.»
★★★★★«Very good all-day moisturizing. No unpleasant fragrance. Convenient airless tube.»
★★★★★«I can't live without it. Moisturizing without mattifying. Freshness on application.»
★★★★«Very light and pleasant gel but doesn't moisturize my dry skin enough.»

Dermatological mist

Hydrabio Mist

★★★★★ 4,77/5 (11 reviews) ~10 € / 300 ml

Dermatocosmetic mist: Bioderma water + mannitol + xylitol. Score for oily skin 84 and normal to oily skin 91 - optimal profile. Dry skin score 0 - strictly contraindicated for this profile (mist without occlusive film on dry skin can accentuate dehydration through evaporation).

⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -1.75). Paradoxical for a mist positioned as soothing - probably linked to its mineral salt composition. User feedback (4.77/5 out of 11 reviews) is positive despite this algorithmic score.
«Hydrabio Mist is suitable for normal to oily skin as an after-rinse anti-scaling mist or daily freshener. Dry skin score 0: strictly contraindicated - risk of paradoxical dehydration through evaporation without an occlusive film. The user score (4.77/5) is better than the algorithmic score would suggest. Excellent quantity/price ratio (300 ml at ~€10).»
User feedback
★★★★★«Excellent mist for removing limescale residues after rinsing. Soothing effect on sensitive skin.»
★★★★★«Good soothing mist. No tightness after use.»
★★★★«Good hydration despite the «not recommended» recommendation on my profile. No bad reactions.»
Verdict - Relevant mist for oily skin (91). Dry skin score 0: contraindicated. Anti-scale useful after rinsing.

Ultra-soothing balm

Atoderm Intensive Balm

★★★★★ 5,00/5 (2 reviews) ~15 € / 200 ml
TOP - Atopic reference

Biomimetic lipid formula : ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids in a ratio that reproduces the natural intercellular cement deficiency in atopic dermatitis. Complemented by’ecobioline - Bioderma patented active ingredient reinforces the beneficial cutaneous microbiome and limits colonization by golden staph, a key pathogen in outbreaks.

✅ Sensitivity verdict Suitable for sensitive skin (score: 0). Oily skin score 0 - formally contraindicated for this profile (very rich formula). Redness score 28.9 - relevant for redness associated with atopic flare-ups.
«Atoderm Intensive Baume is the Bioderma reference for atopic skin. The combination of biomimetic lipids + ecobioline acts on both the barrier and the microbiome - two complementary mechanisms of atopic dermatitis flare-ups. For atopic children: indicated from infancy onwards, tested on pediatric skin. Ecobioline is a real formulation innovation: by selectively reinforcing beneficial bacterial strains, it acts on the microbiological cause of flare-ups rather than just on the symptoms. »
User feedback
★★★★★«Severe atopic skin for years: a must-have cream for years. Calms redness. A must-have.»
★★★★★«This whole range is great. Super efficient.»
Verdict - TOP. Reference for atopic skin. Biomimetic lipids + ecobiolin (microbiome). Suitable from infancy onwards. Sensitivity score 0.

✅ Sensitivity verdict Suitable for sensitive skin (score: +0.75) - excellent for an Atoderm gel-cream. Fills a gap: reactive oily or mild atopic skin that needs a light moisturizer without the rich film of classic Atoderm balms.
«Atoderm Intensive Gel-Crème is the surprise product in Bioderma's catalog. Its anti-aging (80.75) and redness (76.5) scores far exceed those expected of an Atoderm gel-cream, thanks to niacinamide. Sensitivity score +0.75 and oily skin score 84: the best Bioderma cream for reactive oily or mild atopic skin. Perfect score (5/5 out of 3 reviews). Use as a buffer after retinoid or pure vitamin C consistent with the presence of niacinamide.»
User feedback
★★★★★«Very good light body moisturizer, penetrates well without a greasy film.»
★★★★★«Ideal for summer - gel-cream with no greasy feel. No fragrance, I use it on my face before sports.»
★★★★★«Very good gel-cream after retinoid or pure vitamin C. Calms any irritation. Excellent value for money.»

Everything you need really know.

What's the difference between Sensibio H2O and a generic micellar water?
Bioderma invented the format in 1991 and has spent years optimizing the selectivity of its micelles - they capture impurities without altering the natural hydrolipidic film. Generic micellar waters work on the same principle, but with less selective surfactants. On normal skin the difference is negligible. On sensitive or atopic skin Bioderma selectivity makes a measurable difference.
Is the Atoderm range suitable for atopic babies and children?
Yes - Atoderm is formulated for the whole family, from infants to adults. The formulas have been tested on atopic pediatric skin. L’Atoderm Intensive Balm is particularly suitable for mild to moderate flare-ups. For severe flare-ups of atopic dermatitis, a pediatric or dermatological consultation is still necessary.
Cicabio or Cicalfate+ Avène: which to choose?
Both are excellent repair creams (copper + zinc). The Cicalfate+ Avene is slightly more occlusive - preferable for very dry skin or highly exposed areas. The Cicabio has a slightly more fluid texture and a higher sensitivity score (+2.0 vs +1.30 for Cicalfate+) - more comfortable on exposed areas during the day or under make-up.
How to integrate Defensive Serum into an active routine?
Sérum Défensive is integrated as a first layer before a more concentrated active ingredient (retinol in the evening, vitamin C in the morning). Its carnosine and vitamin E create a favorable cellular environment. But at 3.55/5 out of 10 reviews, Test on a small area first - the squalane formula may not be suitable for all sensitive skins.
Why doesn't Photoderm have the Mexoryl 400 filter?
Visit Mexoryl 400 is a filter patented by L'Oréal (the group that owns La Roche-Posay), covering long UVA rays (380-400 nm). It is therefore not available in other marques products. For maximum deep anti-photo-aging protection on this criterion, Anthelios UVMune 400 remains the benchmark. Photoderm Aquafluide remains an excellent SPF for sensitive skin.
Ecobiolin and the skin microbiome: fad or real science?
Real Science. Visit skin microbiome has been an active area of research since the 2010s, with solid data : golden staph is documented as a key pathogen in atopic dermatitis flare-ups. Reinforcing beneficial strains (S. epidermidis) rather than sterilizing the skin is a scientifically validated approach. L’ecobioline by Bioderma is a logical next step.
