Founded in 1977 by Jean-Noël Thorel, Bioderma has built each formula around one principle: the skin has its own defense mechanisms (skin microbiome, acid pH, lipid barrier). Cosmetology must support these mechanisms, not bypass them. In practice: gentle surfactants that respect the hydrolipidic film, physiological pH 4.5-5.5, exclusion of alcohol and preservatives that disrupt the microbiome.
The cutaneous microbiome is the set of microorganisms that physiologically colonize the skin. epidermal staphylococcus, the main commensal bacterium, produces antimicrobial substances that combat pathogens. Disrupting it with aggressive cleansers or alcohol increases vulnerability to skin infection and inflammation.
A micelle is a spherical nanostructure made up of surfactants: hydrophilic head + lipophilic tail. In water, they organize themselves into spheres that capture greasy impurities (make-up, sebum, pollution). no rubbing, no alcohol, no rinsing required. Bioderma has spent years optimizing the selectivity of its micelles for sensitive skin.
«Bioderma's ecobiology is a biologically coherent formulation philosophy. We don't soothe sensitive skin by assaulting it with strong active ingredients - we support it by letting it recover its natural mechanisms. This is precisely what Sensibio formulas do.»
Three types of micelles, three distinct selectivities. The difference can't be seen - it can be measured on sensitive, atopic skin.
| Micelle type | Structure | Action on the skin |
|---|---|---|
| Sensibio H2O | Skin lipid-specific surfactants | Make-up, impurities - without altering the hydrolipidic film |
| Sebium H2O | Identical + Sebum-reducing Fluidactiv | Make-up + excess sebum + qualitative standardization |
| Generic micellar waters | Identical structure, less selective surfactants | Same action - lower skin selectivity |
Organized by skin profile: each problem has its own specific formulation philosophy.
| range | Main target | Formulating philosophy |
|---|---|---|
| Créaline / Sensibio | Sensitive, reactive skin | Ecobiology: respecting the microbiome and natural defenses |
| Sebium | Oily, combination and acne-prone skin | Fluidactiv: normalize sebum quality (not just reduce it) |
| Atoderm | Dry, atopic and eczematous skin | Lipid biomimetics: reconstituting intercellular cement |
| Cicabio | Injured skin, post-treatment | Active repair: accelerating epidermal regeneration |
| Photoderm | Sun protection for sensitive skin | High tolerance: stable filters, tested for reactive skin |
| Hydrabio | Dehydrated skin | Aquagénium patent: stimulating cutaneous aquaporins |
Ranked by descending BeautyDecoded rating. One polarizing product at the bottom of the table (Créaline Défensive Sérum).

The flagship range. Four products based on ecobiology and respect for the microbiome - from make-up remover to serum, with an anti-redness nugget and a polarizing product.
Micellar oil based on light sunflower oil esters and gentle emulsifiers. The micellar oil format is most effective on oily make-up and water-resistant sunscreens - where conventional micellar waters show their limitations. Dry skin score 84 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Oily skin score 0 - to be avoided on very seborrheic skin.
Ultra-gentle surfactants (plant-derived alkyl polyglucosides) with light foaming action without destroying the hydrolipidic film. Oily skin score 78.4 and normal to oily skin score 91 - optimal profile. Sensitive skin score +0.25 - perfectly suited. Compatible with sensitive oily skin, a rare profile to satisfy with a foaming cleanser.
Soothing cream for skin with redness and dilated vessels: Portulacaria extract (anti-redness), glycerin, vegetable squalane. Dry skin score 84 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Sensitive skin score +0.25. Perfect BeautyDecoded rating (5/5 out of 5 reviews) - exceptional signal confirming unanimously positive feedback.
Formula combining glycerine + biosaccharide gum-1 (humectants), carnosine (anti-glycation, collagen protection), vitamin E (fat-soluble antioxidant), tetrapeptide-10 (stimulates dermal-epidermal junction proteins) and sage polyphenols (anti-inflammatory). Score for dry skin 84 and normal to dry skin 91. Sensitive skin score -0.50 - slight algorithmic caution.
Two products for normal to oily skin seeking light hydration without excess. Aquagénium patent for aquaporin stimulation.
Light-textured gel-cream: mannitol (moisturizing sugar), xylitol, rhamnose. Normal to oily skin score 91 - optimal profile. Dry skin score 56 - insufficient for very dry skin requiring more occlusion. Airless tube format - a real hygienic advantage, preserving active ingredients from contamination and oxidation.
Dermatocosmetic mist: Bioderma water + mannitol + xylitol. Score for oily skin 84 and normal to oily skin 91 - optimal profile. Dry skin score 0 - strictly contraindicated for this profile (mist without occlusive film on dry skin can accentuate dehydration through evaporation).
Biomimetic lipids + ecobiolin (microbiome enhancer). Two references: rich balm for atopic skin, light gel-cream for reactive oily skin.
Biomimetic lipid formula : ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids in a ratio that reproduces the natural intercellular cement deficiency in atopic dermatitis. Complemented by’ecobioline - Bioderma patented active ingredient reinforces the beneficial cutaneous microbiome and limits colonization by golden staph, a key pathogen in outbreaks.
Light gel-cream with reduced lipid base: Bioderma thermal spring water +. niacinamide + glycerin. Oily skin score 84 and normal to oily skin score 91 - optimal profile. Redness score 76.5 and blotchiness score 76.5 - the highest in the Atoderm catalog. Anti-ageing score 80.75 - surprising for an Atoderm gel-cream, consistent with the presence of niacinamide.
Active repair copper + zinc + sucralfate. The product with the best sensitivity score in the Bioderma catalog analyzed.
Repair formula : copper + zinc (local antibacterial activity), sucralfate (protective occlusive film retaining moisture for healing in moist environments), glycyrrhizic acid (anti-inflammatory derived from licorice). Dry skin score 91 - optimal. Redness score 68 - relevant for post-treatment irritation.
High-tolerance sun protection for sensitive skin. Assumed limit: no Mexoryl 400 filter (long UVA).
SPF50+ to fragrance-free photostable filters. Sensitive skin score +0.15 - suitable for sensitive skin. Dry skin score 78.4 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Oily skin score 45.5 - usable, but potentially oily finish reported in reviews.
Fluidactiv active ingredient: unique qualitative approach to sebum normalization. Represented here by the Pore Refiner.
Assets Fluidactiv (qualitative normalization of sebum) + light film-former (reduces the appearance of pores in the short term) + zinc. Oily skin score 84 and normal to oily skin score 91 - optimal profile. Dry skin score 18.9 - contraindicated for this profile. Fluidactiv acts on the quality of the sebum produced - making it less comedogenic - rather than simply reducing its production.
Three benchmark marques dermo-cosmetics from France. Each has its own strong points for specific needs.

«Bioderma occupies a special position in dermo-cosmetics: a coherent eco-biological philosophy, expertise in sensitive and atopic skin, and real formulating innovation (micelles, eco-bioline, Fluidactiv). The catalog is uneven - Cicabio Restor, Atoderm Intensive and Créaline Erycontrol are solid signals.»
