Resveratrol and viniferin - what science really says.

Caudalie has built its identity on vine polyphenols - resveratrol and viniferin in particular. These active ingredients are real and well-documented: resveratrol has well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. in vitro. The critical question is: to what extent do these properties, which are solid for systemic use, translate into measurable efficacy for topical application?

01

Serious plant-based cosmetics

Caudalie is certified vegan, uses active ingredients of plant origin and has a real commitment to eco-responsibility. Vine polyphenols (resveratrol, viniferin) have well-documented antioxidant properties. in vitro. The formulations are clean overall, and the philosophy is consistent with natural cosmetology.

02

Less robust topical evidence

Topical clinical evidence for resveratrol and viniferin is still lacking. lower than retinol, vitamin C or niacinamide. For serious blemishes and corrective anti-aging, better-documented conventional active ingredients retain the advantage. Caudalie is relevant in this segment mild antioxidant, not on the powerful patch.

Editorial reading

«Resveratrol and viniferin are not ineffective - their topical clinical evidence is just not on the same level as retinol, vitamin C or niacinamide. Caudalie makes interesting plant-based cosmetics with real antioxidant actives. For serious blemishes and corrective anti-aging, better-documented conventional actives remain superior.»

Hierarchy of clinical evidence.

Not all active ingredients are equal in terms of available evidence. Here's how Caudalie's active ingredients stack up against the cosmetological benchmarks.

Assets Available evidence Cosmetology verdict
Resveratrol (Caudalie) In vitro studies, some in vivo Real antioxidant - topical anti-aging action less proven than retinoids
Viniferine (Caudalie) In vitro studies - internal source Lab tyrosinase activity, limited independent clinical evidence
Ascorbic acid (Vit C) Very solid - > 30 years of study Topical anti-spot and antioxidant reference
Niacinamide Very strong - dermato consensus Anti-spot, anti-inflammatory, barrier reference
Tranexamic acid Solids - melasma data Documented anti-pigmentation reference

✅ Sensitivity verdict Unreservedly suitable (score: +0.50). No added fragrance, no alcohol, no essential oils - a rare combination for a natural cleansing oil, which avoids the main contact allergens.
«Vinoclean Oil is the best product in the Caudalie range - clean formula, effective on all types of make-up, with no alcohol or essential oils. Its sensitivity score of +0.50 makes it a relevant option for reactive skin that rejects the majority of allergen-laden natural make-up removers. Oily skin score 0: contraindicated for very seborrheic skin, where oily emulsification can leave a residual film».»
User feedback
★★★★★«Removes all makeup very well. Leaves a soft finish. I repurchase it regularly.»
★★★★★«Does not sting the eyes, effective and pleasant. As a first step in the evening, removes makeup and sunscreen well.»
★★★★★«Equivalent to hard-to-find Korean oils. Leaves skin soft, no residue.»
★★★★«Perfect for double cleansing. Does not irritate eyes, leaves skin moisturized.»
★★★«An oil, nothing more, nothing less. Insufficient value for money to build loyalty compared to the alternatives.»
Verdict - TOP. Best product in the Caudalie range. Complete make-up removal, clean formula, all skin types except very oily. 23 reviews - the best statistical database in the catalog.
Family 02

range Vinoperfect - spots and shine

⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -0.25). Well tolerated in practice. Versatile profile for all skin types (77-91/100). Light, fluid texture.
ℹ️
Level of evidence. The claim «62× more effective than vitamin C» comes from one study in vitro internal to the Caudalie laboratory. It has not been validated by independent peer-reviewed clinical studies. Vitamin C has over 30 years of independent studies - the level of evidence is not comparable.
«Vinoperfect Serum is a good, gentle serum for recent and superficial blemishes in profiles that cannot tolerate more concentrated active ingredients. Its spot score of 78.2 is relevant. User feedback confirms two groups: those for whom it works on light spots, and those for whom the high price (€52) is not justified by the results. For deep spots or melasma: complete with a better-documented active ingredient (niacinamide, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid). »
User feedback
★★★★★«Perfect - moisturizing, not greasy or sticky. Blemishes reduced, skin all soft with glowy effect. Will definitely repurchase.»
★★★★«Third bottle: clearer skin, reduced acne scars. Progressive, long-term results.»
★★★«Softer skin but no visible results on spots after 2 bottles.»
★★«Zero results. Really expensive for what it is.»
★★★«Mitigated - leaves skin soft but no effect on spots after several weeks.»
Verdict - Gentle serum for light spots. Limited independent clinical evidence on Viniferin. For stubborn stains: insufficient on its own.
AHA exfoliating mask

Vinoperfect Glycolic Peel Mask

★★★½☆ 3,50/5 (4 reviews) ~32 € / 75 ml
TOP - Normal to oily skin

L'glycolic acid (AHA) is one of the best-documented exfoliating active ingredients in cosmetology - 30 years of independent studies on cell renewal, radiance and spot reduction. Anti-aging score 81.6 - high for a mask, consistent with AHA's renewal action. Score 67.15 - relevant.

⛔ Sensitivity verdict Unsuitable for sensitive skin (score: -3.75). Consistent with the nature of AHA: chemical exfoliant requiring established tolerance. Weekly (rather than daily) positioning is an intelligent formulatory decision that reduces the risk of irritation.
⏱️
SPF 50+ mandatory the next morning (photosensitization 48-72h post-AHA). Strictly weekly use - not daily.
«Glycolic Peeling Mask is the second-best product in the Caudalie range - its effectiveness is based on glycolic acid, an active ingredient documented independently of the brand. Sensitive skin score -3.75: to be avoided on this profile. The BeautyDecoded score (3.50/5 out of 4 reviews) is lower than the formulatory verdict - feedback shows polarized results, possibly linked to overly high usage frequencies or poorly calibrated expectations.»
User feedback
★★★★«Smoother, healthier skin after use. Residual tightness - I use it every 15 days rather than every week.»
★★★«No noticeable effect after 4 months of use. Disappointed.»
★★★«Mitigated - pleasant creamy texture but no visible difference on the skin.»
★★★«Doesn't do much for my skin.»
Verdict - TOP for normal to oily skin. Documented active ingredient (AHA). Sensitivity score -3.75: avoid on sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. SPF mandatory.

range Vino Hydra - hydration

Caudalie's most sober, most effective cream in the moisturizing segment. Streamlined formula, high scores for dry skin.

Moisturizing cream

Vinohydra Intense Hydration Cream

★★★★★ 5,00/5 (2 reviews) ~28 € / 50 ml
TOP - Dry skin

Sober formula: glycerine + grape pulp extract + squalane. These humectants (glycerin) and emollients (biomimetic squalane) are well tolerated and effective moisturizers. Dry skin score 91 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Oily skin score 31.5 - too rich for this profile.

⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -0.50). Perfect user rating (5/5 out of 2 reviews) - weak statistical basis but positive signal consistent with sober wording.
«Vinohydra Cream is Caudalie's most sober and effective formula in the moisturizing segment. Clean formula, well-tolerated textures, maximum dry skin score (91). Oily skin score 31.5: exclude from this profile. The biomimetic squalane present - identical in structure to the squalane produced by human sebocytes - penetrates rapidly without an oily film. The composition is much more restrained than that of Crème Cachemire Redensifiante, reducing the risk of reaction in reactive skin.»
User feedback
★★★★★«Divine - I use it in the evening after my retinol serum. Perfectly tolerated.»
★★★★★«Soft texture, very moisturizing, clean composition. Exactly what I was looking for.»
Verdict - TOP for normal to dry skin. Clean formula, effective moisturizing. Too rich for oily skin. 2 reviews - low statistical base but consistent signal.
Family 04

range Resveratrol Lift - anti-aging

Interesting formula (concentrated resveratrol) but compromised by the presence of fragrance. Unsuitable for sensitized mature skin.

Resveratrol lifting serum

Resveratrol-Lift Firming Lift Serum

★★★★☆ 4,00/5 (2 reviews) ~65 € / 30 ml
Problematic fragrance

Concentration in resveratrol higher than in Crème Cachemire - advantage in terms of antioxidant potential. Anti-ageing score 58.65 - relevant. Resveratrol is a documented antioxidant in vitro and in vivo (systemic use), with less robust topical evidence than for retinol or copper peptides.

⛔ Sensitivity verdict Unsuitable for sensitive skin (score: -4.0). The lowest score in the Caudalie catalog analyzed in formulatory terms (excluding Vinopure), directly attributable to the presence of fragrance. In a serum applied daily, fragrance is a real risk factor for irritation and contact allergy.
«Resveratrol-Lift Serum is a formulatively interesting product (concentrated resveratrol), but compromised by the presence of fragrance - inconsistent with an anti-aging target that often includes mature, sensitized skin. Sensitive skin score -4.0: to be avoided on this profile and in association with irritating active ingredients (retinol, acids). High price (€65) for an active whose topical evidence remains inferior to that of retinoids».»
User feedback
★★★★«Refreshing softness, smooth skin without feeling stretched. Quickly absorbed. No visible effects noted.»
★★★★«Fluid that wears off very quickly. No irritation even around the eyes. No noticeable anti-aging effect.»
Verdict - Concentrated resveratrol but unpleasant fragrance on sensitive skin. Sensitivity score -4.0. Prefer a fragrance-free serum for anti-aging. 2 insufficient reviews for definitive conclusion.
Family 05

range Vinosun - sun protection

The Caudalie SPF best suited to sensitive skin. Fragrance-free, zero sensitivity score. Limitation: no long UVA protection.

SPF50+ for sensitive skin

Vinosun Ocean Protect SPF50+ Fluid

★★★★☆ 4,00/5 (8 reviews) ~28 € / 50 ml
SPF tolerant

Non-irritating sun filters, fragrance-free - more tolerant formulation than most Caudalie SPF products. Sensitive skin score 0 - perfectly adapted. Dry skin score 91 and normal to dry skin score 91 - optimal profile. Oily skin score 63 - usable, but oily finish reported by several users.

✅ Sensitivity verdict Unreservedly suitable (score: 0). Fragrance-free, well tolerated on rosacea according to feedback.
ℹ️
Long UVA limit. This SPF does not contain the Mexoryl 400 filter - no protection against long UVA rays (380-400 nm). For maximum protection against deep photo-aging, the’Anthelios UVMune 400 La Roche-Posay remains the specific benchmark for this criterion.
«Vinosun Ocean Protect is the best SPF option in the Caudalie range for sensitive skin - zero sensitivity score (0), fragrance-free, well tolerated on rosacea according to feedback. Limits: oily finish reported on combination to oily skin, and lack of long UVA protection. A relevant option for highly reactive skin that cannot tolerate conventional filters.»
User feedback
★★★★★«My favourite of all the suncare products tested. No reaction from my rosacea. Fragrance-free, a finish that totally suits me.»
★★★★★«Sensitive skin with redness: tolerates very well. Too bad for the slightly greasy finish but common with SPFs.»
★★★★«Non-irritating filters, fragrance-free, good protection. Fairly shiny finish - more for the beach than everyday use.»
★★★«Allergy to grape products - brand totally incompatible with my profile.»
Verdict - SPF tolerant for sensitive skin. Fragrance-free. Slightly oily finish on oily skin. No long UVA protection.

FLOP - Sensitivity -14.5

⛔ Sensitivity verdict Not suitable for sensitive skin (score: -14.5). Clear signal of exclusion for sensitive, rosaceous or atopic skin, or skin undergoing active treatment. Essential oils are among the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetology.
For resistant, non-reactive oily skin. For all other indications, this cleaner is contraindicated. Alternatives without alcohol or essential oils exist with equivalent effectiveness on pores: Effaclar Duo+ La Roche-Posay, CeraVe Anti-Imperfection Gel.
«Vinopure Cleansing Gel is reserved for resistant, non-reactive oily skin. For any other indication - sensitive skin, rosacea, active treatment in progress - the sensitivity score of -14.5 is prohibitive. For resistant oily skin with no particular reactivity, the active ingredients (BHA, polyphenols) can produce visible results on pores and sebum - the 2 opinions available confirm efficacy on acne. This is the only profile for which this cleanser is relevant.»
User feedback
★★★★★«After 1 year of use: no more acne, smoother, softer skin.»
★★★★★«A must for pimples. Effectively purifies my skin.»
Verdict - Effective on resistant oily skin only. Sensitivity score -14.5: not recommended for reactive or sensitive skin.

«Natural» is not synonymous with harmless.

Caudalie strongly communicates its vegan, natural and eco-responsible positioning. These commitments are real - the brand is certified vegan and uses active ingredients of plant origin. However, the cosmetological nuance needs to be clarified.

🔍
Three facts to keep in mind. (1) The essential oils in Vinopure Serum are 100 % natural and vegan - they are nonetheless documented potential allergens (sensitivity score -14.5). (2) The niacinamide (synthetic) or’tranexamic acid (synthetic) have superior clinical evidence to the majority of «natural» active ingredients on the market. (3) Evaluate a product on its active ingredients and their concentrations, not on its label.

Everything you need really know.

Is Viniferin really more effective than vitamin C?
This is Caudalie's claim based on a study in vitro (62× on tyrosinase inhibition). These data have not been validated by independent peer-reviewed clinical studies. Vitamin C has over 30 years of independent studies on thousands of patients. The level of evidence is not comparable - which is not to say that Viniferin is ineffective, but that its evidence is less robust.
Which Caudalie products should I choose?
L'Vinoclean cleansing oil (clean, effective formula for all skin types), the glycolic peel mask for weekly use (documented active ingredient), and for normal to dry skin: the Vinohydra cream. These are the three products with the most favorable formulation/price/effectiveness ratio.
Is Vinoperfect Serum suitable for melasma?
It may be of slight benefit in the early stages of melasma. For established melasma, active ingredients with solid clinical data include’tranexamic acid (La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Serum), the niacinamide 10 %, l'azelaic acid 15-20 %. Daily SPF50+ sun protection is essential - without it, no anti-spot active ingredient can work for long.
Can I use Caudalie products during pregnancy?
Products without alcohol or essential oils are generally compatible: Vinoclean, Vinohydra Cream, Vinosun Ocean Protect. The glycolic mask should be used with care and only occasionally. Visit Vinopure Jelly (alcohol + essential oils, sensitivity score -14.5) should be avoided. Consult your doctor or midwife before making any changes to your routine.
Why does Vinopure score so poorly on sensitivity?
The presence ofdenatured alcohol andessential oils in the formula. Essential oils are among the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetology. This score (-14.5, the lowest in the catalog) is consistent with our formulatory principles: a cleanser applied daily with these ingredients is not recommended for any sensitive or reactive profile.
Does the «vegan» label guarantee product safety?
No. The vegan label indicates the absence of ingredients of animal origin and the absence of animal testing. It does not guarantee product safety or efficacy. A vegan 100 % essential oil may be more irritating than a well-tolerated synthetic molecule.. Evaluating INCI composition remains essential.

«Caudalie is positioned as a serious plant-based cosmetics company, with real antioxidant active ingredients.
