Satisfaction tests vs. clinical trials.

Clarins claims «proven results» with impressive percentages from tests on 360 women. These results come from satisfaction tests - not clinical studies. The distinction is fundamental to assessing a brand's marketing claims.

01

Satisfaction test

Questionnaire subjective to participants. No placebo, no control group, no double blind. Value: marketing - useful perceptions. What Clarins publishes: «91 % perceive smoother skin» - a perception, not a measurement.

02

Randomized clinical trial

Measures standardized objectives (skin profilometry, computational image analysis). Placebo group, double-blind. Value: scientific - biological efficacy. For Double Serum specifically: no independent peer-reviewed published clinical studies.

Editorial reading

«At €86 for 30 ml, the Double Serum formula needs to be compared with what the same budget can buy in concentrated, documented active ingredients at the concentrations shown. The comparison is not favorable to Double Serum. This doesn't mean that the product is ineffective - it means that the claims far outweigh the evidence.»

Le Double Serum - 21 extracts, 5 to 6 relevant.

Hierarchy of available evidence for the main Double Serum extracts. None is a top-tier corrective anti-aging active comparable to documented retinoids or peptides.

Extract Property claimed Available evidence Verdict
Horse chestnut (escine) Anti-inflammatory, microcirculation Givaudan independent studies Solid
Oats Soothing, barrier repair Very strong - atopy reference Solid
Avocado oil Nourishing, antioxidant Solids - unsaponifiables Solid
Edelweiss Antioxidant, lifting Correct - collagen lifting effect Moderate
Turmeric Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant Correct in vitro + supplier Moderate
Ginger Antioxidant, photoprotection Supplier data (Seppic) Low
Quinoa Emollient, antioxidant Few independent studies Low
Banana / Cocoa Moisturizing, relaxing Food data, not cosmetics Anecdotal
Qualicapa / Mandji Not documented No study - exclusive to Clarins None
ℹ️
Fragrance in the formulas. Fragrance is present in almost all Clarins formulas, with the exception of the Calm Essentiel range. Over the long term, fragrance can be allergenic, irritating and photosensitizing - particularly problematic in anti-aging serums for prolonged daily use.

What the same budget allows you to buy elsewhere.

Putting Clarins prices into perspective against documented active product combinations available at the same budget. The comparison is purely formulatory.

«The Eye Zone Concentrate is the highest-rated product in the Clarins BeautyDecoded catalog - rating 5/5, sensitive skin 0, enthusiastic feedback on immediate effectiveness. Universal profile. ⚠️ Sensitivity verdict Slight caution recommended (score: -1.5). Linked to the presence of perfume. Remains a signal for caution on highly reactive profiles.
«Bi-Sérum Hydra-Essentiel HA2+ is one of Clarins» most honest products - moisturizing serum with real scores (oily skin 91, dry skin 88.2), 5/5 rating and confirmed customer loyalty. Limitations: present fragrance (sensitivity -1.5) and high price (€55/30 ml) for a moisturizing serum with no documented corrective active ingredients."
User feedback
★★★★★«Excellent for my dehydrated normal to dry skin. I had noticed great hydration, plumped skin. Stopped using it to try something else but forgot about it - want to try again.»
★★★★★«A good serum, it moisturizes well and leaves skin soft. The two-phase texture is very pleasant to wear. Only negative point: the price.»
Verdict - Universal hydration profile (88-91). Rating 5/5, loyalty confirmed. Perfume: sensitivity -1.5. 55 €/30 ml: questionable Q/P ratio for pure moisturizer.

Central formulatory limit. No first-rate corrective anti-aging active ingredients: no retinol, no documented signal peptides, no pure vitamin C in effective concentration, no active BHA/AHA. The algorithmic anti-ageing score of 87.55 reflects the plant active ingredients present - not their independently proven efficacy.
«Double Serum Light has the best algorithmic anti-aging score in the Clarins catalog (87.55) but no independently documented corrective actives. The 2 BeautyDecoded reviews confirm hydration - not measurable anti-aging efficacy. Oily skin score 0: contraindicated despite «combination skin» positioning. At €86, the Q/P ratio is hard to justify against documented alternatives (see comparative table above).»
User feedback

★★★★«Good moisturizing and softening serum for thirsty skin. It's a relevant option for this profile.»

⛔ Sensitivity verdict Not suitable for sensitive skin (score: -8.0). The lowest score in the Clarins catalog. Composition (fragrance, potential alcohols) clearly unsuitable for reactive skin. Contradiction with «moisturizing toner» positioning.
«Lotion Tonique Hydratante has the lowest sensitive skin score in the Clarins catalog analyzed (-8.0). Despite a correct profile for normal to oily skin (84-91), the reviews confirm the problem: irritating fragrance, drying effect. A «moisturizing» toner with such a sensitivity score contradicts its positioning. At €36/200 ml, the Q/P ratio is questionable.»
User feedback
★★★½«Moisturizing toner, but scented like most Clarins products. Sometimes irritates my sensitive skin. Would not recommend.»
★★★½«Cleanses well but not moisturizing. Dries out the skin a bit - not great.»
Verdict - Sensitive skin score -8.0 (the lowest in the catalog). Irritating fragrance and drying effect confirmed in reviews. Not recommended for sensitive skin.

Negative convergence on 4 opinions. Three systematically reported problems: «chemical» or «kerosene» odor despite the presence of fragrance in the INCI (sensory contradiction), eye tingling, insufficient efficacy. At €35/150 ml, fragrance-free alternatives outperform this product: Uriage Cleansing Oil, Bioderma Atoderm Cleansing Oil.
«Very Cleansing Oil is the FLOP of the Clarins BeautyDecoded catalog - rated 2.50/5 out of 4 reviews, total convergence on unpleasant smell, eye irritation and insufficient effectiveness. Oily skin score 0 confirms poor positioning. Critical signal: the product contains fragrance but is described as having a «chemical kerosene odor» - signal of a formulation where fragrance does not fulfill its sensory function.»
User feedback
★★½«Chemical smell like kerosene - a pity because there is perfume in the INCI. Insufficient effectiveness for the price.»
★★½«Very fragrant oil that doesn't remove makeup perfectly and irritates the eyes. I would not recommend.»
★★½«Bof bof bof. Unpleasant smell, stings the eyes, doesn't rinse off easily. Price completes the negative picture.»
★★½«Not effective on the eyes. Would not recommend.»
Verdict - FLOP. Rating 2.50/5 (the lowest in the catalog). Chemical odor despite fragrance, stinging eyes, insufficient makeup removal - confirmed in all reviews. Oily skin score 0.

Other ranges - INCI analysis only.

Four Clarins ranges do not have sufficient BeautyDecoded data. The analysis below is based on INCI formulation and clinical positioning - without validation by user reviews.

01

Calm Essential - TOP formulatory

33-50 €. 95 % minimum ingredients of natural origin, objective clinical testing (standardized measurements - not simple satisfaction tests), fragrance-free. Restructuring oil: 98 vegetable %, 8 ingredients, organic camellia oil + organic apricot. Minimalism, transparency, fair prices commensurate with formulatory value. The most accomplished range in the Clarins catalog.

02

Multi Active - honest in anti-aging

40-65 €. Identified corrective assets : hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin C - with extracts of wild carder as a base. Glycolic acid and vitamin C have independently documented efficacy. Concentrations not shown - persistent limit. The most formulatively honest of Clarins' anti-aging ranges.

03

Extra Firming - Questionable Q/P

84 € / 50 ml. Anti-ageing plant active ingredients: desert date palm, goji berries, acerola, kalanchoe. None of these active ingredients has independent clinical evidence on skin firmness at cosmetic concentrations.. Shea butter + oat oil: good hydration for dry, mature skin. At €84, the Q/P ratio is the least favorable of the anti-aging ranges.

04

Multi Intensive - claim Harungana=Retinol unproven

~95 €. The star ingredient is’harungana - presented by Clarins as «as effective as retinol». This assertion is not supported by any independent peer-reviewed clinical study.. Comparing in-house a botanical extract to retinol (40 years of independent clinical studies, molecular mechanism elucidated) without peer-reviewed publication is a claim difficult to justify scientifically.

Everything you need really know.

Is Clarins Double Serum worth the price?
At €86-126, the formula only offers no independently documented corrective anti-aging active ingredients in effective concentration. What you pay for: the sensoriality of the double bottle, brand prestige, eco-designed packaging, and 21 botanical extracts, most of which have limited evidence. If you're looking for documented anti-aging efficacy, the same budget will allow you to buy several active serums with different concentrations (see comparison table above).
Is the fragrance in Clarins formulas problematic?
In the long term, yes for sensitive skin - and BeautyDecoded data confirms this problem: the Moisturizing Toner (sensitivity -8.0), the’Cleansing Oil (rating 2.50/5, eye irritation), the Tonic Express Cleanser (2/5, irritating fragrance). The range Calm Essentiel (fragrance-free) is Clarins' answer - but the rest of the range contains it systematically.
Is harungana as effective as retinol as Clarins claims?
This claim is not supported by independent peer-reviewed clinical studies. Harungana is a plant extract with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties - it is a supportive active. Visit retinol has 40 years of independent studies, A molecular mechanism elucidated at RAR/RXR receptor level, and evidence on collagen, pores, texture and wrinkles. The comparison is difficult to justify without peer-reviewed publication.
Which Clarins ranges to choose?
Formulation: the Calm Essentiel range (objective clinical tests, fragrance-free, reasonably priced) and Aromasoin oils for dry skin. For anti-aging: the Multi Active range is the most honest (AH + glycolic acid + vit C identified). The Extra Firming, Multi Intensive and Double Serum ranges have a formulatory price-performance ratio that is difficult to justify against documented alternatives.
Satisfaction tests vs. clinical studies: what's the difference?
A satisfaction test is a subjective questionnaire for participants - with no placebo, no control group, no double blind. Its value is marketing, not scientific. A randomized clinical trial uses standardized objective measurements (skin profilometry, image analysis), a placebo group and double-blinding. Its value is scientific. Clarins« »91 % of women find..." claims are satisfaction tests - not clinical studies.
Are there any Clarins TOP products?
Yes. The Multi-Intensive Eye Zone Concentrate is the highest-rated product in the catalog analyzed (5/5, sensitive skin 0, enthusiastic feedback on immediate smoothing). The three Hydra-Essentiel (Bi-Sérums Suractivé/Intensif and Gel Matifiant) are rated 5/5 with confirmed customer loyalty. In terms of formulation (without BD data): the Calm Essential is the most accomplished.
What is the BeautyDecoded application?
BeautyDecoded is an application that helps you choose cosmetics adapted to your skin type thanks to the’INCI analysis. The application analyzes formulations and generates compatibility scores for 80 skin types. It does not constitute a medical consultation. 13 Clarins products have been identified in the database with real data (ratings and user reviews).

«Clarins occupies a contrasting position. The Hydra-Essentiel range and Concentré Zone Regard are formulatively sound, with strong user feedback. The Calm Essentiel range illustrates the best the brand can produce. Conversely, the Double Serum relies on marketing claims that far exceed the clinical evidence available, and several products combine fragrance and high prices with no formulatory counterpart.»
