«The pH question is the one I ask first when evaluating a chemical exfoliant. A 2 % BHA formulated at pH 5 is less effective than a 1 % BHA formulated at pH 3.5. Paula's Choice has known this all along - it's their fundamental technical advantage over the competition.»
Science: The pH of a formula determines the non-ionized fraction of an acid - the only form that penetrates the lipid skin barrier. At pH 5, less than 1 % of salicylic acid is in active form. At pH 3.5, it's more than 50 %. A BHA formulated at the wrong pH is virtually inactive, whatever its nominal concentration.
Two objectively differentiating elements: (1) Concentrations are displayed and justified - Paula Begoun created Beautypedia in 2008, evaluating each ingredient on the basis of published scientific literature (2). The pH is calibrated - the technical point that sets Paula's Choice apart from almost all mainstream marquess.
| Criteria | Paula's Choice BHA 2% | Classic competitors |
| Concentration | 2 % pure salicylic acid | Often inferior or not indicated |
| Formula pH | ~3,2-3,8 - >50 % active | Often >5 - <1 % active |
| Complementary assets | Anti-inflammatory green tea + glycerine | Often none or alcohol (irritant) |
| Presence of alcohol | No | Common in competing BHAs |
| Texture | Light, non-greasy lotion | Often viscous gels or lotions |
| Usage | All skin types, including sensitive | Often reserved for oily skin |

Salicylic acid 2 % at calibrated pH ~3.2-3.8 - range of maximum effectiveness. This pH calibration is the fundamental technical differentiator: at pH 3.5, over 50 % of salicylic acid is in non-ionized (penetrating) form. At pH 5 (neutral skin), less than 1 % is active. Imperfections score: 85.0 - the highest in the Paula's Choice catalog analyzed for this criterion.
Alcohol-free - unlike most competing BHA lotions. Green tea (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory) + glycerine as complementary active ingredients. Oily skin score: 84 and normal to oily skin score: 91 - optimal profile. Dry skin score: 73.5 - usable, but AHA 8% is better suited to this profile.
BeautyDecoded score: 4.74/5 out of 31 reviews - excellent score for a significant volume. Feedback confirms a triple action: smoothing skin texture, reducing imperfections, improving radiance. Tolerance signal: some users find it too strong for the face and move it to the body or opt for BHA 1% Calm.

My analysis
«BHA 2% Lotion is the global benchmark for BHA exfoliants - 30 years after its creation, no competitor has managed to offer such a rigorous formula (calibrated pH + alcohol-free + anti-inflammatory active ingredients). Blemish score 85 out of 31 BeautyDecoded reviews confirms effectiveness. For over-sensitive skin: Calm BHA 1% is the transitional version.»
Verdict: TOP - World reference BHA. Blemish score 85. pH calibrated + alcohol-free. SPF 50+ mandatory. 31 BeautyDecoded reviews.

Pure retinol 1 % - concentration indicated and verifiable in the INCI. High concentration: confirmed profiles only. Anti-aging score: 95.2 - the highest in the Paula's Choice catalog analyzed. Blemish score: 93.5 - exceptional for a retinol. The formula combines retinol + niacinamide (irritation compensator, barrier reinforcement) + AH + peptides.
Sensitive skin score: -5.0 - unsuitable without very gradual introduction. This score is consistent with the high concentration and lack of oxidation inherent in pure retinol. BeautyDecoded score: 4.88/5 out of 30 reviews - the best score in the Paula's Choice catalog analyzed on a significant volume.
Feedback indicates two distinct usage profiles: confirmed users (no irritation, rapid results) and beginners (significant irritation despite gradual introduction). This division is consistent with the concentration of 1 % - to be reserved for profiles that have already established their tolerance to retinol 0.3 % or 0.5 %.

«Clinical 1% Retinol is Paula's Choice's most complete retinol formula - indicated concentration, built-in compensating niacinamide, anti-aging 95.2. Outstanding score (4.88/5) on 30 reviews. Sensitive skin score -5.0: very gradual introduction strictly mandatory. For beginners: start with Clinical 0.3% + Bakuchiol before moving on to 1%. »
Verdict: TOP - Anti-aging 95.2 and spots 93.5 (best in catalog). Score 4.88/5 out of 30 reviews. Sensitivity score -5.0: confirmed retinol profiles only.

15 % pure ascorbic acid (L-AA) + 1 % vitamin E + ferulic acid: the antioxidant trio validated by Kerry Hanson (Dermatol Surg, 2005). Vitamin E regenerates oxidized vitamin C (active recycling); ferulic acid stabilizes both vitamins in the light, multiplying their combined antioxidant activity. Blemish score: 90.1 and anti-aging score: 90.1 - among the highest in the catalog.
Calibrated pH ~3.5 - essential condition for skin penetration of pure ascorbic acid. Bisabolol + panthenol + tripeptide limit the potential irritation associated with this acidic pH. Sensitive skin score: -2.0 - slight caution, consistent with acidic pH. AH + glycerine compensate for potential dehydration.
BeautyDecoded score: 4.80/5 out of 15 reviews. Feedback confirms effectiveness on dark spots after 8-12 weeks of morning use with SPF. Stability signal: several users report no oxidation at room temperature - consistent with the stabilizing acid pH.

Retinol 0.3 % + bakuchiol 2 % - an intelligent combination for profiles wishing to start retinol gently. Bakuchiol is a plant retinoid (extracted from Psoralea corylifolia) that amplifies the action of retinol without increasing irritation. Anti-ageing score: 93.5 and dark spots: 91.8 - virtually identical to Clinical 1% thanks to the retinol + bakuchiol synergy.
Dry skin score: 91 - optimal. Sensitive skin score: -2.20 - slight caution, much better algorithmic tolerance than Clinical 1% (-5.0). BeautyDecoded score: 4.80/5 out of 5 reviews - excellent rating. Feedback is unanimous on tolerance: ideal for beginners, rapidly visible results, well-tolerated dry and sensitive skin.
This formula is the recommended entry point into the Paula's Choice retinol range. The logical progression: 0.3% + bakuchiol - 1% (Clinical) if tolerance confirmed. Anti-aging and blemish scores almost equivalent to 1% illustrate the effectiveness of bakuchiol as an amplifier.
My analysis
«Clinical 0.3% + Bakuchiol is the best Paula's Choice option for starting retinol - anti-aging (93.5) and blemish (91.8) scores almost identical to 1%, for a far superior tolerance profile (sensitivity -2.20 vs -5.0). BeautyDecoded reviews confirm rapid adoption by dry, sensitive skin without irritation. Bakuchiol is used here as an amplifier, not a substitute.»
Verdict: TOP - Best retinol entry point. Anti-aging scores 93.5 and spots 91.8. Superior tolerance to 1% (-2.20 vs -5.0). Ideal for beginners.

Niacinamide 10 % - documented optimal concentration - combined with phospholipids (stimulation of endogenous ceramides + complementary structural lipids), ascorbyl glucoside (stable vitamin C derivative), allantoin and panthenol. Sensitive skin score: +1.0 - the best in the Paula's Choice catalog for this criterion. Universal scores of 88.2/100 for all skin types.
Redness score: 86.7 - exceptional for a niacinamide serum. Anti-aging score: 83.3 and blemishes: 79.9 - relevant. Phospholipids are a real differentiator: few niacinamide serums on the market contain them. They act synergistically to reconstitute the barrier - niacinamide stimulates endogenous ceramides, phospholipids supply structural lipids.
BeautyDecoded score: 3.00/5 out of 3 reviews - a paradoxically low score for an excellent product. Feedback reveals a synergistic effect with other active ingredients (vitamin C, azelaic acid) but no spectacular efficacy when used alone. The price (~52 €/20 ml) is explicitly mentioned as a disappointment in relation to the perceived efficacy.
Source : Draelos ZD et al. Niacinamide-containing facial moisturizer. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2005.
My analysis
«10% Niacinamide Booster is the most complete niacinamide formula on the market (phospholipids + ascorbyl glucoside in addition to niacinamide) - score for sensitive skin +1.0 and redness 86.7 exceptional. The BeautyDecoded rating (3/5) mainly reflects a questioned quality/price ratio rather than a formulative flaw. More economical alternative: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% (€6.80) + lipids separately.»
Verdict: TOP (formulation) / Price to be decided - Redness score 86.7 and sensitivity +1.0. Differentiating phospholipids. Alternative: TO Niacinamide 10% (€6.80).

Perfect BeautyDecoded score (5/5 out of 3 reviews) - the best score in the Calm Paula's Choice catalog. All users declare rosacea or sensitive combination skin - confirmation of clinical positioning. BHA 1% exfoliates without aggressing: gentle chemical exfoliation, the first step towards more concentrated exfoliants.
This product is the recommended entry point for sensitive profiles who want to access the benefits of BHA (smoothing pores, reducing imperfections) without the risk of irritation of BHA 2%. The logical progression: Calm BHA 1% - BHA 2% if tolerance confirmed.
My analysis
«Calm BHA 1% is the revelation of the Paula's Choice catalog - perfect score (5/5) on rosaceous and sensitive skin, sensitive skin score 0. It's the entry point I recommend for reactive profiles who want to start chemical exfoliation. Oily skin score 91: optimal profile even on this type of skin.»

Rich lipidic formula: omega fatty acids (omega-3, -6, -9 - elements of intercellular cement), ceramides, multiple antioxidants. Dry skin score: 91 - optimal. Redness score: 37.4 - relevant for rosacea. Oily skin score: 35 - too rich for this profile. Anti-aging score: 68 - relevant thanks to antioxidants.
Sensitive skin score: -0.50 - slight caution. BeautyDecoded feedback confirms use as a winter treatment and as a blending cream with retinol in the evening to reduce irritation - clinically relevant use. A user with rosacea particularly endorses it for autumn/winter.
The quality/volume ratio (~45 € / 59 ml) is questioned in the reviews - the packaging with the cap that doesn't fit properly is a flaw reported by a loyal user (multiple repurchases despite the flaw).
My analysis
«Omega+ Moisturizer is the benchmark rich night cream in the Paula's Choice catalog - dry skin score 91 and redness 37.4. Useful as a blending cream with retinol to limit irritation. Oily skin score 35: to be avoided on this profile. Packaging defect reported: unstable cap.»

Oily skin score: 45.5 - moderate. Unlike Azelaic Acid Suspension The Ordinary (silicone formulation unsuitable for oily skin), Paula's Choice Booster has a lighter, more suitable texture. Sensitive skin score: -1.25 - slight caution consistent with the BHA 0.5% present.
BeautyDecoded score: 3.88/5 out of 4 reviews. Feedback is moderately positive - used when travelling as an alternative to AA under prescription, well tolerated on sensitive rosacea skin. Modest but present tolerance signal.

Feedback is unanimously positive on two counts: tolerance for rosacea and a nourishing texture with no greasy film. One user alternates it with another cream (1 evening out of 2) to avoid excessive richness - a sign that the formula is slightly too rich for daily use in all seasons.
Comparison with Avene Calm: same rosacea positioning, same positive sensitivity score. Paula's Choice Calm is richer in repairing lipids - an advantage for dry skin with rosacea, slightly too rich for combination skin with rosacea.
My analysis
«Calm Rescue & Repair Moisturizer is the Paula's Choice reference option for dry skin with rosacea - sensitivity score +0.50 and perfect score 5/5. The richness of the formula is an advantage for dry rosacea skin and a slight disadvantage for combination skin (use 1 evening out of 2 recommended on this profile).»

Why is Paula's Choice BHA more effective than others?
Two technical reasons: (1) the pH is calibrated at ~3.2-3.8, which allows more than 50 % of salicylic acid to be in active (non-ionized, penetrating) form. Most competing BHAs are formulated at pH >5 where less than 1 % is active. (2) The formula is alcohol-free - many competing BHA lotions contain alcohol, which irritates without adding effectiveness.
Can BHA and Paula's Choice AHA be used together?
Yes, but not on the same evening - risk of cumulative irritation. Alternation is the recommended strategy: BHA Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays, AHA Tuesdays/Thursdays. Never use two exfoliants at the same time. SPF 50+ in the morning after any exfoliant.
Clinical 1% Retinol or Clinical 0.3% + Bakuchiol: which to choose?
For retinol beginners: Clinical 0.3% + Bakuchiol - anti-aging (93.5) and blemish (91.8) scores almost identical to 1%, clearly superior tolerance (sensitivity -2.20 vs -5.0). For confirmed profiles with established tolerance: Clinical 1% delivers the fastest results. Logical progression: 0.3% + bakuchiol 3-6 months - 1% if tolerance confirmed.
Paula's Choice vs The Ordinary: which to choose?
They complement each other. The Ordinary offers the best price/concentration ratio. Paula's Choice offers the best galenics (calibrated pH, complete formulas with comfort active ingredients). Optimum budget combination: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% (€6.80) + Paula's Choice BHA 2% (no direct equivalent at TO).
