Why your skin has become «sensitive»
70% of French women report irritated skin.
Redness, tightness, tingling, overheating... Your skin reacts to everything now.
But why has your skin become so reactive?
Because you (unknowingly) use products that destroy your skin barrier day after day. Drying alcohol, stripping sulfates, allergenic essential oils, irritating UV filters, perfumes...
Sensitive or sensitized skin?
First thing to understand: sensitive skin is not not a skin type (such as oily or dry skin).
It's a status which can be superimposed on your skin type. For example, oily skin can develop sensitivity.
Sensitive skin (genetic)
Genetic defect, vascular weakness. It's rare and can't be «cured», but it can be managed.
Sensitized skin (acquired)
Your skin is now reactive due to abuse of :
- Environmental factors (wind, sun, pollution, hard water)
- Too many aggressive or unsuitable cosmetics
- Alcohol, tobacco
- Stress, emotional state
- Hormonal changes (cycles, menopause)
💡 The good news: If your skin is sensitized (and not genetically sensitive), you can restore your skin barrier avoiding irritating ingredients.
The 5 families of ingredients that destroy your skin barrier
Here are the culprits you'll find in almost all your products :
1️⃣ Drying alcohol
How to find it (INCI list) :
Denatured alcohol., Alcohol, Ethanol, Isopropyl Alcohol, SD Alcohol 40
Why it's used:
It evaporates quickly, creates «featherweight» fluid textures, and helps certain active ingredients (Vitamin C, UV filters) to penetrate more quickly.
The problem:
To penetrate, alcohol acts like a powerful solvent It dissolves the lipids that seal your skin. The result? Dehydration + easier entry for irritants.
2️⃣ Essential oils
How to identify them (INCI list) :
Mentha Piperita Oil (Mint), Lavandula Angustifolia Oil (Lavender), Citrus Limon Peel Oil (Lemon), Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil (Tea Tree)
Why they are used :
Stars of organic cosmetics. Used for their antibacterial and purifying properties, and for natural fragrance without synthetic perfumes.
The problem:
They are extremely allergenic. Citrus oils (Lemon, Bergamot) are also a good choice. photosensitizing They may cause blotching if exposed to sunlight after application.
3️⃣ Sulfates
How to identify them (INCI list) :
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - the most irritating, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) - the most common, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Coco-Sulfate
Why are they used?
Very inexpensive and effective foaming agents. They create that abundant lather and «squeaky-clean» feel.
The problem:
They «strip away the hydrolipidic film. In response, the skin feels attacked and produces even more sebum to defend itself (bouncing effect). It's a vicious circle for oily skin, and a disaster for dry skin.
4️⃣ Older (chemical) sunscreens
How to identify them (INCI list) :
Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone), Octocrylene, Homosalate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate), Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone)
Why are they used?
The cheapest and most common filters on the market. Invisible, they protect well... as long as they're stable.
The problem:
- Instability : Avobenzone degrades in 1 hour in sunlight
- Irritation : The #1 cause of burning, watery eyes
- Health : Suspected endocrine disruptors
5️⃣ Fragrance and allergens
How to identify them (INCI list) :
Perfume / Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Benzyl Salicylate
Why it's used:
Skincare is a sensory experience. Fragrance makes application pleasant, creates a brand olfactory signature («the smell of luxury»), and masks the unpleasant chemical smell of raw ingredients.
The problem:
- The vague term «Parfum» conceals a secret blend of hundreds of unlisted molecules
- The #1 cause of skin reactions (allergies)
- It sustains invisible micro-inflammation
- Often contains phthalates (endocrine disruptors)

⚠️ Important: This guide does NOT cover «useful» assets»
This guide lists the ingredients that disrupt unnecessarily your skin barrier.
The following powerful assets are NOT included in this blacklist:
- Retinol (cell regeneration)
- Pure vitamin C (antioxidant, radiance)
- AHA/BHA exfoliating acids (cell renewal)
These molecules are «useful» because they have a beneficial biological action on the skin. Yes, they can be irritating if used incorrectly, but that's precisely why they are the subject of dedicated chapters in the BeautyDecoded Method to learn how to master them.
The golden rule: «Less is more».»
The presence of one of these ingredients does not make a product «dangerous» in the legal sense.
But it makes him counter-productive for skin in pain (acne, rosacea, eczema, sensitized skin).
Your role is not to prohibit, but to understand :
