Blackheads: where do they come from ?

Blackheads are simple micro-cysts that are benign, but often invasive. They occur mainly on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), sometimes on the back or shoulders. They result from excess sebum and dead cells clogging the pores: on contact with air, the blackhead oxidizes and takes on its characteristic black color.

Several factors contribute to their appearance: hormonal variations, stress, processed foods, alcohol and tobacco. Oily skin is the most prone to blackheads. In some cases, blackheads can develop into more painful inflammatory pimples, which generally disappear on their own.

Chemical exfoliation: how it works

Unlike mechanical exfoliation (grains), chemical exfoliation uses exfoliating acids to dissolve the bonds between dead cells and unclog pores gently, without friction. Two main families exist:

BHA (salicylic acid)
AHA (glycolic, lactic acid)
Solubility
Liposoluble: penetrates sebum in pores
Water-soluble: acts on the surface of the epidermis
Target
Blackheads, clogged pores, oily skin
Skin texture, radiance, spots, fine lines
Ideal skin
Combination to oily, prone to imperfections
Normal to dry, dull complexion

For blackheads, BHA (salicylic acid) is generally the most effective, as it penetrates the sebum in the pores. AHAs (glycolic, lactic) complete the action by smoothing the surface and reviving radiance.

Not to be confused with

Cosmetic exfoliation is not a peel. Performed by a dermatologist at higher concentrations, the medical peeling treats deeper problems (fine lines, brown spots, acne scars). Cosmetic exfoliation remains a gentle maintenance treatment.

Exfoliate without damaging the skin.

Start slowly: once or twice a week maximum. Beyond that, the skin risks being weakened and producing more imperfections.

Apply to clean, dry skin, after cleansing, avoiding the eye contour area.

Never combine several strong acids (or an acid and a retinoid) on the same evening, to limit irritation.

Apply sun protection SPF 50+ in the morning: exfoliating acids, especially AHAs, are photosensitizing.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skins should avoid high concentrations: a BHA at 1 % or reduced frequency will be preferable to a strong glycolic.

Which exfoliator to choose according to skin type ?

Oily skin with blackheads : a BHA with salicylic acid as a priority (Paula's Choice 2% BHA), possibly an azelaic concentrate targeted at imperfections (SVR).

Dull complexion, uneven grain: an AHA with glycolic acid (The Ordinary 7%, Paula's Choice 8%), alternating with BHA.

Sensitive skin : prefer low concentrations, space out applications, and avoid strong acids such as glycolic 7-8 % or alcohol concentrates.

Your questions about exfoliation.

AHA or BHA for blackheads?
BHA (salicylic acid) is best suited to blackheads, as its lipid-soluble formula penetrates sebum in pores to unclog them. AHAs (glycolic, lactic) act on the surface, refining skin texture and reviving radiance, in addition to BHA.
How often should I exfoliate?
Once or twice a week is sufficient in most cases. Exfoliating too frequently weakens the skin barrier and can aggravate imperfections. The frequency should be gradually increased, according to tolerance.
Do I need sun protection with an exfoliant?
Yes, absolutely. Exfoliating acids, especially AHAs, are photosensitizing: SPF 50+ sun protection in the morning is essential to avoid spots and irritation.
Can sensitive skin be exfoliated?
Yes, but with caution: low concentrations, reduced frequency, and avoiding strong acids (glycolic 7-8 %) or alcohol-based formulas. A mild BHA at 1 % is often better tolerated.
What is the BeautyDecoded application?
A mobile application for cosmetic analysis using artificial intelligence. It analyzes INCI lists and generates compatibility scores for 80 skin types. It does not replace a medical consultation, but helps to objectify product selection according to a skin profile.

Information for educational purposes only. It does not replace a medical consultation. Exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA) are photosensitizing and require daily sun protection; they should be introduced gradually, once or twice a week, never in combination with a retinoid on the same evening. BeautyDecoded algorithmic scores do not prejudge individual tolerance: a test on a small area is still recommended, and sensitive or reactive skins will prefer lower concentrations.
