How to treat dark circles - blue, brown, hollow according to a doctor and analyses by BeautyDecoders.

Three types of dark circles, with different treatments. Blue circles are caused by transparent vessels under thin skin: caffeine, vitamin K, retinol. Brown circles are pigmented: vitamin C, niacinamide, gentle exfoliants, sun protection. Hollow circles are a loss of volume: only hyaluronic acid injections can correct them. Identifying the cause is the key step.

Identify the cause

There are many causes of dark circles: genetics, allergies, hyperpigmentation, ligament and bone structure, skin quality, sun, tobacco. Understanding the cause before starting treatment is essential.

🔎

The simple test : gently stretch the skin under the eye. If the discoloration fades, it's a dark circle. blue (vascular). If it persists, it's a dark circle. brown (pigmentary). If the dark appearance is due to a shadow in a hollow, it's a ring. hollow, which mainly involves injections.

Type 01

Visit blue line (pink, purplish)

The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest in the body (half a millimetre), with no subcutaneous fat: it allows the vessels and muscle to be seen through, hence the bluish hue. Insufficient sleep dilates the venous network, amplifying dark circles. Useful active ingredients: retinol (thickens the dermis), caffeine (vasoconstrictor), green tea (circulation, antioxidants).

Type 02

Visit brown line (pigmentary)

Caused by an accumulation of melanin, revealed by the thinness of the skin and aggravated by UV rays (highly exposed orbital rim). The sun is central: a tinted sunscreen (iron oxides) is the best preventive measure. Useful active ingredients: vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide, gentle exfoliants (glycolic, lactic, PHA), azelaic acid, bakuchiol. If the upper eyelid is also affected, the cause is often genetic (less reactive to treatment).

Visit hollow ring

The hollow ring appears colored because a hollow absorbs light and creates a shadow. This hollow may be present from birth, linked to the structure of the orbit and ligaments, and becomes more pronounced with age. There may also be a false impression of hollow due to palpebral bags.

Cosmetics have little effect

For hollow circles, the standard treatment is an injection of hyaluronic acid to fill the hollow, performed by a doctor. A fat hernia requires surgery. These procedures require individualized medical consultation. In addition, a healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise, smoking cessation) improves skin quality.

Understanding the ring

There are a number of anatomical factors that explain the dark circles and the eyelid-cheekbone junction. The skin of the lower eyelid is thinner than the malar skin; at the eyelid level, there is no subcutaneous fat, whereas at the malar level, the fat becomes brutally thick.

Herniated orbicular fat can accentuate dark circles. Bone structure plays a role, but less important than skin quality - hence the importance of appropriate facial care. To find out more, see our selection of anti-wrinkle creams.

The routine concealer

Step by step

Clean, treat, moisturize

1

Cleansing oil Gentle alternative to micellar water, which can be irritating.

2

Cleansing gel Morning or evening, after cleansing oil.

3

Lotion or essence Moisturizes, smoothes fine lines and adds radiance.

4

Anti-Dark Circle Serum retinol, peptides, vitamin C derivatives or hyaluronic acid.

5

Anti-dark circle cream Day or night, adapted to skin type.

6

Mask & corrector For a one-off radiance boost, and as a make-up corrector.

💡

The treatment of dark circles is time-consuming and often only partial: corrective make-up remains a good daily complement, particularly for pigmented and hollow circles.

Visit medical treatments

For information only. All medical procedures involve risks and require individual consultation. Several techniques are available: hyaluronic acid injections to fill hollow circles, nanofat (emulsified and filtered fat) to thicken eyelid skin and reduce discoloration, skin-regenerating peels, and lasers (vascular for visible vessels, ablative for excess melanin). In France, PRP is prohibited for aesthetic purposes, but authorized for therapeutic purposes.

Your questions about dark circles

How do I know what type of dark circles I have?
Gently stretch the skin under the eye: if the discoloration fades, it's a blue (vascular) ring; if it persists, it's a brown (pigmented) ring. If the dark appearance is due to a shadow in a hollow, it's a hollow ring, which is mostly caused by injections.
Which active ingredient for dark circles?
Vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide and gentle exfoliants act on pigmentation, complemented by azelaic acid and alpha-arbutin. Sun protection, ideally tinted, is essential, as UV rays aggravate hyperpigmentation.
Are concealer creams really effective?
They attenuate blue and brown circles with gradual and often partial results over several weeks. Hollow circles, on the other hand, respond poorly to cosmetics and are best treated with injections. Corrective make-up is a good complement.
Does lack of sleep cause dark circles?
Lack of sleep dilates the venous network and accentuates blue circles. Sufficient rest will not make pigmented or hollow circles disappear, but it will significantly improve vascular circles and the appearance of fatigue.
Can hollow circles be treated without injections?
Hardly. Because it's a loss of volume that creates a shadow, cosmetics do little to improve it. Injections of hyaluronic acid remain the reference treatment, performed by a doctor. Make-up can reduce the shadow effect on a daily basis.
