Scientific deciphering - BeautyDecoded

Reviews and best moisturizing lotions: a doctor's guide to choosing the right fuel.

With so many cosmetic products to choose from, it's hard to find your way around, especially when it comes to lotions, essences and moisturizing toners. Is adding another step to your routine really worth it? This article deciphers the mechanisms of action, cross-references BeautyDecoded algorithmic data with actual feedback from app users, and proposes a reasoned selection by issue.

This content is for information and educational purposes only. It does not constitute medical advice, and recommendations must be adapted to each individual. The application BeautyDecoded analyzes INCI formulations using artificial intelligence to identify the right cosmetics for each skin type.

Definition: lotion, essence and toner

The definitions of these products are numerous, often vague, and end up meaningless. In this article, the term is used to describe a moisturizing product, generally rich in humectants, whose purpose is to deliver active ingredients targeted at a specific problem. The boundary between lotion, essence and toner is more a question of marketing than of strict formulatory reality.

How to incorporate moisturizing lotion into your routine

An essence is used after cleansing, or just after a pure vitamin C treatment. It essentially provides humectants that hydrate the skin. This hydration must then be sealed by a product richer in emollients or occlusives, depending on skin type: a moisturizing cream or sun cream are ideal. Between the two, a serum targeting a particular problem can be inserted: anti-aging, anti-dark spot or anti-imperfections.

An often overlooked practical point: to maximize its effectiveness, moisturizing essence should ideally be applied as follows on still damp skin. This promotes water absorption and skin penetration of active ingredients.

Do we really need an essence or lotion?

The answer is yes, on one condition: the added product must contain an ingredient absent from the rest of the routine. If this is the case, you're adding real value to your skin. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and money.

A concrete example: if you're already using a moisturizing serum with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, there's little point in adding an essence containing the same ingredients. The same applies if your cleanser and lotion both contain salicylic acid. Multiplying steps also increases the risk of irritation, even if essences are generally well tolerated. Particular vigilance is required with very low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid molecules, which can generate reactions in certain profiles.

What they say scientific data ?

Three families of active ingredients regularly feature in the best moisturizing lotions, each documented in scientific literature.

Ferments

Fermented ingredients

Bifida, saccharomyces, lactobacillus, Aspergillus oryzae: derived from the transformation of a substance such as rice or soy, in the absence of oxygen, through the action of micro-organisms. Rich in amino acids, they are excellent humectants. They help rebuild the cutaneous barrier of sensitized skin and are packed with antioxidants.

A 2014 study showed that most fermented ingredients reduce tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis, scientifically supporting the impression of a brighter complexion (Huang H-C et al., 2014).

Mucine

Snail mucin

Less studied than other active ingredients, it is attracting growing interest. In vitro studies show that it promotes the migration of dermal fibroblasts, prevents oxidative damage and regulates collagen-degrading metalloproteases.

A clinical study using confocal microscopy observed an improvement in collagen fiber parallelism and skin luminosity. (Tribó-Boixareu MJ et al., 2019).

Humectants

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid remains the benchmark humectant. The most effective formulas combine several molecular weights to act at different levels of the epidermis.

A hyaluronic acid lotion is a simple moisturizing base, but it's no substitute for a cream: it attracts water without sealing it in.

Who is it for? each type of lotion ?

BeautyDecoded algorithmic scores enable us to objectify the orientation of each product. Essences rich in ferments and soothing extracts (heartleaf, ginseng, kombucha) score well on redness and sensitive skin. Hyaluronic-acid-dominant lotions excel in pure moisturizing, but remain neutral on anti-aging and blemishes. Rice and black rice toners stand out for blemishes.

This is an appropriate option for sensitive, combination or redness-prone skin. Its very light, water-like texture makes it easy to apply targeted serums afterwards. Its positive sensitive skin score makes it one of the most tolerant lotions in the BeautyDecoded database.

Summary of user reviews
5/5

«It's become one of my must-haves, thanks to its soothing action. I'll never be able to do without it again.»

5/5

«Removes redness well, very light like water, top for oily skin.»

Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium - Hyaluronic acid lotion

4,69/5
27 reviews BeautyDecoded - ~16 € / 170 ml - Main active ingredient: multi-form hyaluronic acid

The Japanese benchmark for low-budget moisturizing, this lotion combines several hyaluronic acid derivatives (hydrolyzed, hydroxypropyltrimonium hyaluronate) with humectants such as hydroxyethyl urea and diglycerol. The texture is thicker than that of a classic toner. Dry skin score of 91 Optimal profile for pure hydration. On the other hand, the scores for anti-aging, blemishes, redness and blotchiness remain neutral: this product moisturizes, but doesn't treat specific problems.

Decoding

A relevant option for those looking for effective, economical moisturizing. But be careful: it's a humectant, not a cream. You need to seal in this hydration with an emollient care product. On very dehydrated mature skin, it may prove insufficient on its own. Its slightly sticky texture is frequently mentioned.

Summary of user reviews
5/5

«I've tried other hyaluronic acid lotions and always come back to it.»

4/5

«Texture a little thick but does its job, which is to moisturize. I recommend.»

3/5

«I don't think it replaces a moisturizer: it's more of a humectant at the start of a routine.»

Skin suffering from vascular rosacea remains cautious when confronted with the richness of plant extracts.

All about moisturizing lotions.

Does a moisturizing lotion replace a cream?
No. A lotion or essence essentially provides humectants that draw water into the skin. This hydration must be sealed by a care product richer in emollients or occlusives, such as a cream or sun cream. Used alone, especially on dry skin, it is insufficient.
Should the lotion be applied to dry or damp skin?
On damp skin, ideally just after cleansing. This maximizes water absorption by humectants and promotes penetration of active ingredients.
Which lotion should I choose for sensitive skin or skin prone to redness?
Soothing formulas based on heartleaf, centella or oatmeal are recommended. In the selection, Anua Heartleaf (sensitive skin score +1.5) and Colibri Revival offer the best tolerance profiles.
Are ferment essences really effective?
The scientific literature documents their interest: excellent humectants rich in amino acids, antioxidant action and reduction in tyrosinase activity, which supports the illuminating effect felt. Their main advantage is that they provide a type of active ingredient often absent from the rest of the routine.
How to avoid duplicate assets?
The principle is simple: the lotion must provide an ingredient absent from the rest of the routine. If your serum already contains niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, choose an essence that focuses on another active ingredient (ferments, mucin, black rice) rather than duplicating it.
