THE BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL FOR HAIR

Coconut oil has become a must-have for hair care. Thanks to its many beneficial properties, it is the perfect ally for healthy hair.

Hair Composition and Structure

Hair is made up of three main layers, each with a specific function that contributes to its health and appearance.

1. The Medulla

The medulla, also known as the medulla or medullary canal, is the inner layer of the hair shaft. It lies at the center of the hair and is more developed in thick hair, while it is virtually absent in fine hair.

Function:

The medulla is made up of largely non-keratinized, air-filled cells, which may play a role in thermal insulation. However, its exact role is still only partially understood.

2. The Cortex

The cortex is the thickest intermediate layer of the hair shaft. It accounts for most of the hair mass and is made up of elongated, compact keratinized cells.

Composition:

The cortex contains two main components:

  • Fibrous proteins Mainly keratin, a structural protein rich in sulfur-containing amino acids such as cysteine, which forms disulfide bonds. These bonds give hair its strength, elasticity and structure.
  • Pigments Melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color, is found in the cortex. There are two main types of melanin: eumelanin (dark colors) and pheomelanin (light colors).

Function:

The cortex gives hair its strength, elasticity and color. Damage to the cortex can result in weak, brittle and dull hair.

3. Cuticle

The cuticle is the hair's outer layer, made up of flat, interlocking keratinized cells resembling fish scales.

Function:

  • Protection The cuticle protects the inner layers of the hair against mechanical, chemical and physical damage.
  • Gloss An intact, smooth cuticle reflects light, giving hair a shiny, healthy appearance.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Intense Hydration and Nutrition

L'coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that penetrates deep into the hair fiber. Its structure is particularly compatible with hair keratin, enabling optimal absorption. This deep hydration helps nourish and revitalize dry, damaged hair.

Protection and Reinforcement

By forming a protective barrier around the hair shaft, coconut oil limits dehydration and protects hair from external aggressors such as pollution, UV rays and heated styling tools. It also reinforces the hair's hydrophobic barrier, preventing protein loss and excessive water absorption.

Dandruff Reduction

Coconut oil's antibacterial and antifungal properties make it an effective remedy for dandruff. By soothing scalp irritation and reducing flaking, it contributes to a healthy, balanced scalp.

Hair Growth Stimulation

Although scientific evidence is limited, regular use of coconut oil in scalp massage can promote blood micro-circulation, stimulate hair follicles and encourage the growth of stronger, thicker hair.

Gentle detangling

Coconut oil is a natural alternative to chemical detangling products. Applied in small quantities to lengths and ends, it facilitates detangling, reduces frizz and leaves hair soft and shiny.

How to use Coconut Oil for Hair

Shampoo

Add a few drops of coconut oil to your usual shampoo to strengthen hair and give it shine, while combating dandruff.

As a hair mask

For dry, frizzy or damaged hair, apply a coconut oil mask. Leave on for a few minutes in the shower or overnight for deep repair. Rinse thoroughly after application.

In Dry Oil

Apply pure coconut oil to ends and lengths for optimum nutrition. Avoid oiling the scalp. A weekly application is sufficient for dry hair, while once or twice a month is suitable for other hair types.

Practical advice

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature below 25°C. To liquefy it, simply place the jar under hot water. This transformation in no way affects its beneficial qualities.

Coconut oil is a true elixir for hair, offering hydrationprotection and revitalization. Whether your hair is dry, damaged, frizzy or dull, incorporating this plant oil into your hair routine can make all the difference.
