Lphotoprotection on dry skin poses a different galenic challenge to that of oily skin. The lipid deficiency characteristic of this skin profile results in a weakened barrier, increased insensible water loss, and heightened sensitivity to drying agents. Several organic filters and excipients frequently used in photoprotection - denatured alcohol, high concentrations of silica, mattifying polymers - can significantly aggravate this dryness. The choice of a suitable sunscreen cream is based on a balance between effective spectral coverage and preservation of the barrier function.
Developments in dermo-cosmetic formulations over the last decade have made it possible to integrate moisturizing active ingredients (glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, ceramides) directly into photoprotection products, transforming sun cream from a single-function care product into a hybrid moisturizing-protection product. For dry skin, this integration is a major advantage: it avoids the superimposition of oily layers and guarantees effective application of photoprotection even on initially dehydrated skin.
Three categories for dry skin.
The choice of filters and the formulation around them determine the tolerance of photoprotection on dehydrated skin. The analysis is structured around three axes.
New generation

Five strategies for formulation.
The analysis covered all photoprotections referenced in the BeautyDecoded database. Formulations with a «Dry skin» score of over 80 and a «Normal to dry skin» score of over 90, containing modern filters and at least one major humectant active were filtered out. Formulations with significant concentrations of denatured alcohol were excluded.
The final selection covers five different formulation strategies, from purified pharmaceutical fluids to moisturizing K-beauty formulations. Dr Sylvain David's sensitivity rule was applied to each product.

This French pharmaceutical formulation combines modern spectral coverage with a fluid galenic formulation centered on the aqueous phase. The absence of denatured alcohol is a major advantage for dry skin, unlike many pharmaceutical competitors. Rice starch and tapioca starch add a gentle mattifying dimension without drying out the skin, providing a light finish rather than extensive mattifying. Glycerine and soybean oil complete the moisturizing action. Its fluid galenic formula makes it a suitable option for dry skin without a marked oily tendency. The presence of Lens esculenta extract adds a secondary antioxidant dimension.

Which option for which profile ?
How to integrate it into a routine.
The application of photoprotection to dry skin is part of a three-step morning routine: gentle, non-lipid-removing cleansing, appropriate serum or moisturizing cream, followed by photoprotection. For truly dry skin, using a moisturizing serum based on humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) before photoprotection optimizes water absorption in the stratum corneum. Photoprotection then takes over, providing both sun coverage and an integrated moisturizing dimension, depending on the formulation chosen.
Advice application
The amount of photoprotection actually applied is the main predictor of actual protection. The documented reference quantity is 2 mg/cm² (2 mg/cm²), 1.25 g for face and neck (equivalent to two full fingers of product). This quantity is rarely reached in practice: applying half the amount reduces the effective SPF by around a quarter.
On dry skin, the pleasant sensoriality Moisturizing formulations make it easier to apply sufficient quantities, which is an indirect advantage over mattifying galenic formulations that are sometimes under-dosed.
Reapplication every two hours for prolonged exposure remains imperative. On dry skin exposed to urban sunlight, reapplication via a moisturizing mist with filters or mini-photoprotection is a pragmatic strategy. Superimposing an additional layer does not pose the matification problem encountered on oily skin.

On mature dry skin, combining photoprotection with a morning antioxidant serum (vitamin C, polyphenols) potentiates the preventive effect through a complementary approach: filters block UV energy before skin penetration, while antioxidants neutralize the free radicals formed by the unblocked UV portion.
When visit.
Topical photoprotection is an essential, but not sufficient, component of sun prevention. Complementary measures - covering clothing, wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours - remain indispensable, particularly for light phototypes.
Profiles presenting photo-aggravated dermatoses (lupus, rosacea, melasma, recurrent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or frankly dry skin in the context of a constituted dermatosis (atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis) require a dedicated medical assessment that falls outside the scope of this cosmetic analysis.
