Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is one of the most versatile and well-tolerated active ingredients in cosmetics. It regulates sebum, reduces blemishes and hyperpigmentation, strengthens the skin barrier by stimulating ceramides, soothes acne and has an anti-aging action. Assets the most versatile

Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is a very interesting cosmetic ingredient, particularly useful as a complement to the two other leading active ingredients, i.e. retinol and the vitamin C. Versatile and gentle, it deserves a place in almost every routine.

What niacinamide made for the skin

01

Anti-aging action

It stimulates collagen production, reduces wrinkles and acts as a shield against collagen destruction by UV rays. Studies use 4 to 5 %, for 8 to 12 weeks.

02

Anti-stain action

It reduces melanin transfer to the surface: effective on solar hyperpigmentation, post-acne and melasma. At 2-5 % for 8 weeks, it significantly lightens, with less irritation than hydroquinone.

03

Skin barrier

At 2 %, it increases the synthesis of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids: reinforced barrier, less water loss, better tolerance to other active ingredients. Valuable on dry, redness-prone skin.

04

Anti-acne action

It regulates sebum and calms inflammation. At 4 % for 8 weeks, 82 % improvement, slightly better than clindamycin gel 1 % - without creating bacterial resistance. Ideal for oily skin.

In a nutshell: niacinamide is anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, anti-spot, anti-aging and reinforces the skin barrier. This explains the popularity of this active ingredient.

For which skin types ?

01

Oily skin

Water-soluble, it can be found in non-greasy serums and lotions, perfect for oily skin. It reduces sebum, soothes redness and visibly tightens pores.

02

Sensitive skin

Neutral pH and very stable, it is well suited to reactive skin and is found in many moisturizers.

03

Dry skin

By stimulating the production of ceramides, it strengthens the skin barrier and reduces dryness deep down.

Niacinamide is therefore suitable for all skin types, from the driest to the most sensitive, including problem skin (eczema, rosacea, acne), by improving the barrier function and limiting inflammation.

Side effects and combinations

Niacinamide is one of the safest active ingredients: it can even be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Most studies have focused on concentrations below 5 %, so a higher concentration may, in rare cases, cause tingling or redness on sensitive skin. If this happens, we lower the concentration; but more often, a reaction comes from another ingredient in the product, not from niacinamide itself. The only drawback is that niacinamide is slow-acting, so you need at least two months to see results.

An easy combination

Together with retinol, it reduces side effects by reinforcing the skin barrier, making it invaluable even around the eyes. Contrary to an old rumour, the niacinamide + vitamin C combination is perfectly feasible according to recent studies.

Your questions about niacinamide

What concentration of niacinamide should I choose?
Studies show that a concentration of 2 to 5 % is sufficient for most benefits. Serums with 10 % are effective, but may sting sensitive skin. There's no need to aim too high: a moderate, well-tolerated concentration is better than a high, irritating one.
Can niacinamide and vitamin C be combined?
Yes, the rumor of their incompatibility comes from an old article; recent studies confirm that they can be used together without any problem. For example, you can apply vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at another time, or both together.
Niacinamide and retinol: a good combination?
Excellent, in fact: niacinamide reinforces the skin barrier and reduces irritation caused by retinol. This is one of the most useful combinations for sensitive skin new to retinoids.
Is niacinamide suitable for oily skin?
In fact, it's one of its best properties: it regulates sebum, soothes inflammation and reduces the appearance of pores. Its water-soluble form (serums, lotions) avoids greasy textures ill-suited to oily skin.
How long does it take to see results?
Niacinamide works more slowly than retinol or vitamin C: you need at least two months of daily use to see visible results. If nothing changes after a few days, this is normal: patience is the key.

The compatibility scores generated by the application do not prejudge the individual tolerance of each skin type. Niacinamide is one of the best-tolerated active ingredients and can still be used during pregnancy, but high concentrations may cause tingling or redness in reactive skin. In case of skin pathology or doubt, dermatological advice is recommended. A tolerance test should be carried out before using the product for the first time.
