Age Absolute Serum by Uriage at €49.90: detailed analysis of the INCI formula

By Sylvain David, founder of BeautyDecoded

Uriage is strongly promoting its new Age Absolute serum with a TV and web campaign and omnipresent visuals. The pink bottle evokes an «advanced dermatological formula» combining retinoid, procollagen peptide and hyaluronic acid.

At €49.90 for 30 ml, the positioning is clearly premium.

I analyzed the public INCI list to better understand the actual structure of the formula. Here's a detailed reading.

What the brand stands for

On its official website, Uriage presents the Âge Absolu serum as a global anti-aging solution.

Three assets in particular stand out:

  • Procollagen peptide Stimulates collagen production«
  • Retinol helps fight wrinkles«
  • Hyaluronic acid moisturizes and plumps«

In addition, there are several marketing arguments:
«These include »procollagen Boost X6«, »8,000 redensifying microspheres«, action on »the 10 signs of aging« and a patent named »Telomeres protect".

From a marketing point of view, the whole is coherent. However, an analysis of the INCI list provides additional elements of understanding.

A well-constructed moisturizing base

Before analyzing the assets, it is important to stress one positive point: the basis of the formula is well formulated overall.

At the top of the list are :

  • glycerine, betaine, propanediol → effective humectants
  • triglycerides and shea butter → emollients
  • meadowfoam oil → skin stability and comfort

👉 Result: a consistent moisturizing base that's well tolerated and pleasant to apply, which may explain the immediate effect felt.

Retinol“: actually retinyl palmitate

A detailed reading of the INCI list provides an important clarification.

The term «retinol» used in the communication actually corresponds to "retinol". retinyl palmitate, as indicated by an associated label.

This practice complies with regulations, but needs to be explained.

Retinyl palmitate is a retinol ester that has to undergo three conversion stages to become active in the skin.

Simplified retinoid hierarchy :

  • Retinoic acid → reference (prescription)
  • Retinal → 1-step conversion
  • Retinol → 2-step conversion
  • Retinyl palmitate → 3-step conversion

👉 Each conversion step is associated with a potential loss of efficiency.

In the scientific literature, retinyl palmitate is generally considered less active than pure retinol at equivalent concentration.

📄 Duell EA et al., 1997 - PMID 9284094

In this formula, it appears in 26th position out of 34, which may suggest a relatively low concentration, but it is not possible to precisely deduce the actual dose.

Procollagen Boost X6: scientific interpretation

The peptide highlighted is tetrapeptide-4, studied for its effects on fibroblasts.

The «X6» argument is based on studies in vitro, where the peptide tested alone can multiply procollagen production under optimal experimental conditions.

In the finished product, it appears in 31st position out of 34.

👉 The number «X6» therefore describes a laboratory result.
👉 It cannot be directly transposed to a clinical effect on human skin.

In practice, effectiveness depends on several parameters:

  • actual concentration
  • cutaneous penetration
  • interaction with the formula

INCI position and concentration: how to interpret

The position of an ingredient in the INCI list gives a relative indication of its concentration.

👉 In general:

  • main ingredients are at the beginning of the list
  • ingredients at the end of the list are present in smaller quantities

Beyond the 15th position, the contribution generally becomes more limited, even if it is not zero and depends strongly on the nature of the asset.

The “8,000 microspheres”: a visible but surface effect

The formula contains film-forming polymers (notably copolymers and acrylates).

👉 Their role :

  • create a surface film
  • optically smooth the skin
  • give an immediate “plumped-up” effect

This effect is :

  • real
  • perceptible as soon as it is applied
  • temporary

This is an effect surface cosmetics, complementary to, but distinct from, a profound biological effect.

Global reading of the formula

The active ingredients highlighted all appear in the second half of the INCI list:

  • Hyaluronic acid → position 19
  • Derived vitamin C → position 20
  • Retinyl palmitate → position 26
  • Tetrapeptide-4 → position 31

In the case of vitamin C (ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate), some studies suggest effective concentrations of just a few percent.

👉 Position in INCI list does not allow us to assume that these concentrations are reached here, but gives a relative order of magnitude.

Positive points to remember

Despite these nuances, several elements are interesting:

  • well-formulated moisturizing base
  • good overall tolerance
  • presence of antioxidants (vitamin E)
  • explicit mention of pregnancy
  • pleasant immediate effect thanks to polymers

In the end?

The formula is consistent both in terms of moisturizing and sensorial qualities.

The anti-ageing active ingredients highlighted are present, but in positions that are compatible with more modest concentrations, without prejudging their actual effectiveness.

👉 This serum may be suitable :

  • for sensitive skin
  • anti-aging beginners
  • for those looking for an immediate, comfortable effect

The anti-aging effect seems to be mainly linked to :

  • hydration
  • surface smoothing effect

Fragrance is a subjective element to consider - for my taste, it's too present, but it's a personal perception that can vary from one person to another

The real subject: how to read an INCI

This case is neither isolated nor problematic in itself.

It illustrates a frequent reality:
👉 formulas combine moisturizing base, sensory agents and active ingredients in different concentrations.

👉 To better understand a product :

  • a highly concentrated asset is generally at the top of the list
  • at the end of the list, its impact depends on its effective dose

At €49.90, the Âge Absolu serum is not a bad product.

It's :

  • a pleasant moisturizer
  • with immediate visible effect
  • and moderate anti-aging positioning

👉 It is primarily aimed at profiles looking for tolerance and comfort, rather than maximum performance.
